CD Projekt RED’s upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 is perhaps one of the most hyped upcoming games if not the most hyped game of all time. And without a doubt, Keanu Reeves has a major role to play in developing the hype for Cyberpunk 2077. And now, it seems that a Cyberpunk 2077 movie starring Keanu Reeves is looking more and more likely.
In an interview with Video Games Chronical, Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith talked about the potential of a Cyberpunk 2077 movie starring Keanu Reeves. When asked whether or not Pondsmith and his team are pursuing Cyberpunk movie rights, he replied rather vaguely by saying:
“I can’t really say anything on that [a Cyberpunk 2077 movie]. But with Keanu Reeves being tied up in things, it’s become much more of a possibility,” he said. “At this point, we are teaching people about this new kind of cyberpunk. My favorite film is Blade Runner, but I recognize inherently that it’s a cerebral film and 2049 was even more cerebral. A cerebral film is not necessarily going to allow other people to enter that space and understand it, but at the same time you don’t want to do it totally action.”
Arguably, games, movies, manga, and anime, all of these different media feed into one another to create a whole genre of futuristic cyberpunk. Manga and anime like Ghost in the Shell played an immensely vital role in the production of Matrix—a futuristic cyberpunk movie starring Keanu Reeves. Matrix drew on various concepts introduced in Ghost in the Shell, going as far to take certain visual elements and introduce them directly in the movie.
And even before Matrix even became a thing, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner introduced the cyberpunk world onto the big screen, becoming a cult classic. Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that is clearly being influenced by all of these media. Even the original Cyberpunk board game drew on a lot of material from movies like Blade Runner. So Cyberpunk 2077 is also doing that, it is taking a lot of inspiration from Matrix, Blade Runner, and Ghost in the Shell whilst trying to bring something original to the table. This is something Pondsmith talked about in his interview.
“We found a sweet spot with Cyberpunk which is, we make you think, but we don’t bog you down and give you an education,” said Pondsmith.
“At the end of the day, there will be a moment when you’re sitting there as V and you’ll look down and realize that both of your hands are essentially cybernetic tool factories. As a player, you should at some point think, ‘what is that like?’ There should be that moment of discomfort.”
Everyone knows that CD Projekt RED’s upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 is based on the original Cyberpunk 2020 board game. Another board game, Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), was later adapted into movies. Granted, they were abominations but they became movies. So if D&D can do it, so can Cyberpunk. And who better to star in it other than Matrix veteran, Keanu Reeves.
No one knows whether or not a Cyberpunk 2077 movie ever becomes a reality, or even if it will star Keanu Reeves. Right now, most of the attention is towards the Cyberpunk 2077 game.
