Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot apparently has complete faith in Michael Ancel, the creative director for Beyond Good and Evil 2. The game, which was a surprise announcement from Ubisoft at this year’s E3, has a lot going for it, especially since it’s been over a decade since the original from 2003.
The game, instead of focusing on the original protagonist Jade, instead focuses on a crew of space pirates who are on a quest to find “true freedom”. While that seems like a nebulous goal, considering the critical acclaim that the original Beyond Good and Evil game, Beyond Good and Evil 2 will hopefully have a great story to go with it.
The game will also be expanded a great deal. Whereas in the first game you were stuck on a single planet, this time around players will be traveling through space, visiting various planets as they look for clues to get to their goal. On the way we’ll likely meet a colorful cast of characters, ranging from the monkey and girl from the trailer to other members of the crew.
Guillemot has said about Ancel that he’s confident that the man can blow them away again, and his confidence in Ancel is well placed. Michael Ancel is responsible for the creation of one of Ubisoft’s most beloved characters, Rayman, and he was also the creative director on the original Beyond Good and Evil game.
So, essentially, having Ancel back in the saddle can hopefully only be good news for a game like Beyond Good and Evil 2. Considering its new genre, the huge new cast of characters that we’ll be interacting with, and everything we’ll be seeing, hopefully Beyond Good and Evil 2 will be the masterpiece that everyone hopes it will be.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 has no confirmed release date or release platforms, but hopefully we’ll find out about those soon enough.
