Call of Duty: WW2 brought the series back to its roots, however, according to Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg, Sledgehammer Games originally intended to develop Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 2 but Activision convinced the studio to go for a Call of Duty set in World War 2.
Speaking with Newsweek, Eric revealed that SLedgehammer Games originally intended to develop a sequel to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. He added that at that point fans were already calling for the franchise to return to its roots and convinced Sledgehammer to develop Call of Duty: WW2.
We knew they would become historians, that they would tackle it with authenticity, give it tremendous care and we also knew they would capture the unspeakable scale of World War II.
However, Sledgehammer Games itself was not sure about the sequel to Advanced Warfare. According to studio head Michael Condrey, discussed while developing Advanced Warfare 2 would have been a natural thing but, that wouldn’t have got fans excited.
He added that with the game having a three-year development cycle, it has become important for the studio to predict game industry trends three years prior and act according to it. “I think the most interesting and challenging part of those conversations is trying to predict where the industry is going to be in three years”.
Not only that, Call of Duty: WW2 has also seen an increase of 57% in sales compared to Infinite Warfare. Not only that, the game also saw an increase of 21% in revenue and this only includes physical sales.
Furthermore, the game is also doing way better compared to Call of Duty: Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, Infinite Warfare, and Black Ops 3 as the game saw a peak of 56K players in its multiplayer mode during launch week.
Call of Duty: WW2 is a first-person action shooter developed by Sledgehammer Games for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
