If you happen to have the slightest of knowledge on how space works, you would also know that technically there should be no sounds up there. However, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, in space and without sounds would be absurd too, right?
Infinity Ward is taking up a rather interesting approach to sort out this problem, something that they say is very plausible too… but we’ll find out in a while, won’t we?
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is Set in Space, So What’s That Sound?
So basically what they are doing is, they are creating this scenario where the character’s space suit is simulating the sounds of combat around you.
The senior art director of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Brian Horton pointed it out as an issue they have resolved for the people, explaining how in the game your suit is using photons to replicate the sounds of the explosions and fire and so on:
In the game, there’s a way your suit can simulate those sounds and impacts through photons so that you have a tactical awareness of your environment. We’ve dampened the sound a little, but it’s still there to make sure the player has a good time. This is actually not science fiction either–it’s actually very plausible.
Certainly, the sound is not going to be the same as it is when you are playing on the ground, which is not the only thing that will be different for you when you are playing the latest Call of Duty title.
The second and even more important thing is going to be your movements in space battles. Everyone knows that space has zero gravity, and traversal in such a plane is like floating weightlessly.
In order to keep things in line with the fast paced action of COD titles, Infinity Ward gave you the grappling hooks that allow fast movements.
It will be interesting to see how they pull of the issue with sounds in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
