Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is now the second most hated video on YouTube. With over 2 million dislikes and hundreds and thousands of comments, Infinite Warfare’s reveal trailer has become a pain for Activision.
For years, Call of Duty has been recycled with the same bunny hope mechanics and futuristic setting. Ghosts tried to be different but turned out to be a disappointment, Advanced Warfare, Black Ops 3, all top selling games thanks to the 12 year olds in possession of their Mom’s credit card, and no understanding of how exactly money works.
I hear many YouTubers saying they don’t like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare but are still going to pick it up to give it a chance. These people are part of the problem, not the solution. COD is a 13 year old franchise but since Modern Warfare series, the only highlight has been Black Ops. Other then that, we have seen a constant decline is quality.
The Exosuits are gimmicky, movements are too fast and COD now feels more like Halo. Activision need to ask itself, Why would someone play a futuristic COD instead of Halo or Destiny?
Activision needs to bring in fresh ideas based on community feedback. These constant failures to listen has tarnished the reputation of Activision execs as no one truly believes the claims of “built from the ground up” and “biggest COD game” they make every year.
The root of the problem isn’t at Infinity Ward, it is Activision that needs to change. These studios have been working on COD for a long time and you can’t possibly expect them to come up with a great game every single time. Their creativity and originality is so circumscribed due to the fact that they are working on the same game over and over again; so Activision should take it easy with the franchise and take it off the pedestal for a year or two.
What made matters worse for COD was the reveal of Battlefield 1.
It gave fans exactly what they wanted for the time being, boots on the ground, intense war game and even though we have been to WW before in many games, right now it feels fresh and unique because of Call of Duty’s refusal to change and Activision’s ignorance to listen to the community.
And why would they? They are making enough money. The CEO recently said that he doesn’t care about Infinite Warfare hate because pre orders are strong.
Battlefield 1’s reveal had a direct impact on Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Would things have been different if Battlefield screwed up as well? They wouldn’t probably be as bad as they are now so Battlefield 1 has definitely influenced the hate.
This is something Activision needs to pay attention to, possibly use this to motivate themselves to take risks.
COD needs to find better writers for the game’s single player campaign. They need to rethink their multiplayer and have boots on the ground rather than wall-running and boost jumps.
A new engine with state-of-the-art visuals, brand new animations (no recycling), and most of all, listen to COD community.
