AMD Vega 20 is rumored to provide the same level of performance as the GTX 1080 at a lower price point. A Final Fantasy XV benchmark mentions what seems to be an AMD Vega 20 GPU but the performance is not on par with a GTX 1080.
AMD Vega 20 is going to move to the 7nm process and with the smaller node comes better efficiency and higher clock speeds. But I did mention back when we first heard about this that you should not expect too much. This is not a new architecture but a refresh. So you will only get small boosts in performance.
Final Fantasy XV is a pretty intensive game but the GTX 1080 came out more than a year ago and AMD Vega 20 has not achieved much if it cannot match the performance of the GTX 1080 even after a refresh. If it can’t match the performance of the 1080 then it will have not shot competing with the new Nvidia RTX series.
The refreshed card is able to perform 10% better than the Vega 64 and that is pretty much it. What you have to keep in mind is that this could be an early engineering sample. We are not sure when these benchmarks were taken.
We are also not sure what kind of drivers this graphics card was using. It is possible that with better drivers there will be an increase in performance and that the final version of the card will perform better as compared to what we see here.
We will have to wait for the final card to come out in order to know for sure what AMD Vega 20 has to offer. For now, all that we can do is wait and see.
Let us know what you think about the performance of the AMD Vega 20 graphics card that we see here and whether or not this is something that you are interested in.
