Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt RED shared why the studio is so confident about the success of this game. According to the developer, the success of The Witcher gave them confidence and since they aren’t afraid of change, they are confident they can make Cyberpunk 2077 a huge success.
The Witcher series brought CD Projekt RED into the limelight but moving on from the franchise to something like Cyberpunk was a risky move. No one has been able to pull a Cyberpunk-ish game off successfully but CD PR turned out to be the only developer the community had faith in for Cyberpunk.
The studio was determined to deliver a proper Cyberpunk 2077 experience.
Our environment artists are populating a level with the assets, and they are not afraid of testing out new things. This is exactly what we need to stay open to because personally, I believe The Witcher turned out that good – and why Cyberpunk will turn out really good because we aren’t afraid of change.
It takes a degree of determination, for sure. From the very beginning we were saying ‘Alright, this is huge, but this is what we want to aim for.’ As producers, we’re responsible for taking this vision and verifying the capability of the team and deciding if we have to change it structure-wise, or if we have to somehow change the content of the game to make it more flexible.
CD PR is aiming to turn this into a franchise they can continue for at least as long as they continued The Witcher. As for The Witcher itself, the series isn’t done for good because at some we may see it return. However, Geralt may no longer be the lead character. In fact, the voice actor for Geralt wants The Witcher 4 to focus on Ciri’s journey of becoming a proper Witcher.
Cyberpunk 2077 is releasing on consoles and PC sometime in the next two years.
