Avengers: Infinity War Sequel and Time Travel Theories, the Russo Brothers Hint Visiting the Past

The internet has been fairly busy coming up with several time travel theories in recent months for the untitled sequel to Avengers: Infinity War.

The stream of speculations started running right after images were leaked from the set that showed some of the superheroes wearing a strange gadget on their attires. This was followed by the notion that Marvel Studios would be incorporating the element to reboot the Marvel Cinematic Universe for future releases.

Perhaps the Time Stone in the Eye of Agamotto, from Doctor Strange, will be involved? Maybe Thanos will use his Infinity Gauntlet to manipulate spacetime? Could it be that Cable will be making an appearance from the future?

For the time being, fans have pretty much locked in that at least one of those time travel theories will come into play in the second part of Avengers: Infinity War.

While appearing in the latest episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Russo brothers teased that the time travel rumors may be stretching a bit too far.

They pointed out a scene from Captain America: Civil War that saw Tony Stark introduce B.A.R.F. (Binarily Augmented Retro-Framing) to shape the future. The directors quipped that the specific piece of technology was showcased for a very specific reason.

Anthony Russo: “Oh you know, big fan of the technique.”

Joe Russo: “Back to the Future…”

Anthony Russo: “Yeah, Back to the Future…”

Joe Russo: “Look, it’s interesting because yes there are photos that always leak, and then there’s lots of conjecture about what those photos mean. Certainly, there is a five-minute sequence in ‘Civil War’ around a piece of technology that was laid in for a very specific reason. So if you go back and look at that film, you may get a hint as to a direction.”

Avengers: Infinity War will hit theaters on May 4, 2018. The untitled sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4, is slated to premier on May 3, 2019.
