Worlds 2017: New Legends Are Born, One Dynasty Crumbles
The League of Legends World Championship (Worlds 2017) officially concluded its run just moments ago, signaling the start of a new competitive era.
When SK Telecom T1 (SKT) and Samsung Galaxy (SSG) met in the grand finals last year, it was the powerhouse led by Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok that managed to clinch victory after a tense series.
This year gave the community the rare opportunity to witness a rematch between the two teams for the annual championship crown. However, the results came out to be completely different for everyone involved.
SSG stepped on to the stage hungry for revenge, and proved its mettle by completely wiping the floor with SKT by winning three games in a row.
SSG took the first game in 37 minutes without dying once, following with another convincing victory in just 35 minutes. The last game in the series saw SKT desperately trying to claw its way back, but it had to ultimately bend the knee in the end.
This is the first world championship victory for the current roster–second for the Samsung organization–and will go down as one of the most memorable ones in the history of the game.
SKT has been a dominating force on the competitive front for years, working like machines nonstop to stay ahead of the competition. It goes without saying that SSG had to put in equal amounts of, if not more, effort in its own practice.
The result is not just an amazing trophy for winning Worlds 2017, and nor is it the attractive prize money. The more profound result for SSG is that it achieved it all by dismantling the most successful and feared team in the history of competitive League of Legends.
