Atari CEO Confirms A New Atari Console Is Being Made

A new Atari console has been confirmed to be on its way by the Atari CEO, but what exactly it will be like remains a mystery to us.

A week ago, a video was posted onto YouTube by Atari that showed off what might have been a remastered version of the Atari 2600 console. Now the Atari CEO has confirmed that a new Atari console is being worked on, though we don’t have any real information about it.

While we don’t really know the specifics of what this upcoming Atari product might be, it’s very likely that it’s something similar to the NES Classic that Nintendo released several years ago, being a remade version of a classic console that can connect people to the nostalgia of long-ago games.

Many people wondered if the teaser for the new Atari console (for now called the “Ataribox”) could be fake, posted by a phony YoUTube account or just put up as a joke by the company. However, with the confirmation of Atari CEO Fred Chesnais, the Ataribox does appear to be a thing.

Despite the confirmation of the console, we don’t know what it will look like, how much it will cost, when it will release, or even what games are on it. Nintendo’s NES Classic had a variety of old NES games on it, and Atari may very well have a similar setup.

However, the NES Classic was also intended only for a limited run, for collectors, and was discontinued earlier this year due to persistent supply difficulties. Whether or not the Ataribox and Atari are also going that route is still up to Atari to announce.

Either way, with a new Atari console actually being made, hopefully we won’t have too much longer to wait before it’s released (and that Atari will have learned from Nintendo and will make enough units to keep up with demand.)

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what Atari tells us about the upcoming console.
