Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Choices Will Influence the Next Game

One of the various complaints that came with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was that the choice that you made at the end of Human Revolution didn’t appear to matter. The Deus Ex: Mankind Divided choices, however, will apparently not be that way. This is according to the game’s producer, Olivier Proulx.

Proulx blamed the technology of the time that Human Revolution was built during for the reason that the choices of Human Revolution would not carry over to Mankind Divided. The official reason given was originally that it was to avoid locking players into a certain story that they themselves did not choose. The Mankind Divided choices, however, will not have these technological constraints.

Mass Effect pioneered the “Your choices matter” style of narrative storytelling, with each story carrying over to the next game. When the Xbox One and Playstation 4 came out, Dragon Age: Inquisition, the third entry into the Dragon Age series, had to make due with the Keep, an online service where players could pick how their story went for all possible decisions. This, however, was somewhat buggy.

The ending of Human Revolution is very Mass Effect 3-like in its execution: Adam is called upon to make three choices, with a fourth also being available to keen-eyed players. The first is to show everything to the world at large, which will also cause people to fear bio-technological progress.

The second, to blame terrorists to keep the unrestricted (and unregulated) development of augmentations growing. The third puts the blame on the cripplingly expensive drug Neuropozine, claiming that poisoned stocks made people go insane. And the fourth, Adam’s own choice, was to destroy it all and let people have their own conclusions.

With the start of a new console generation, the Mankind Divided choices are now in a good position to carry over to the next game. Whatever happens at the end of the game will come to the next Deus Ex game, if Eidos Montreal decides they want one.
