Microsoft Says This Might Be The Last Console Generation

The console wars have been something that’s been happening since the very first game consoles came out. Whether it’s Atari or NES, Nintendo 64 or Playstation, Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, Xbox One or Playstation 4, they’ve always been a constant of the gaming scene. Now, as a guess by Microsoft, the last console generation may be here.

Aaron Greenburg, the head of Microsoft’s Xbox game marketing, clarified the statement by saying that he believed that console gaming would go the way of PCs. Rather than a several-year-long gap between consoles, he anticipates that soon there will be a steady stream of console upgrades coming out to keep up with the rapid pace of technology.

Considering all the hustle and bustle around the Xbox One and Playstation 4 and their 4K mid-generation upgrades, the possibility of this being the last console generation isn’t that much of a farfetched prospect to deal with. With such projects as the Playstation 4 Neo and the Xbox One Scorpio, gamers will be getting bigger hardware than anything that’s ever been on a console before.

The Xbox One Scorpio, with its 6 teraflops of processing power, will be able to run games at a higher framerate and resolution than any console before it. Even the Playstation 4 Neo, which touted itself on an ability to play both games and videos in 4K, doesn’t have that much power.

Both the original Xbox One and the Playstation 4 have both only been out on the market for around three or four years. In that time, multiple new versions of various graphics cards have come out, along with better hardware.

If this does turn out to be the last console generation, and we’ll be dealing with constant hardware upgrades in the future, hopefully it won’t be prohibitively expensive for gamers to keep up with so that they can get the latest hardware to have their consoles keep up with PCs.
