Getting destroyed by AI in Stellaris is something that can be hard to avoid, especially if you let AI complete ship designs for you.

When it comes to Stellaris fleet building, it is important to note that each weapon and armor type in the game has a direct counter which is something that AI does not take into consideration and must be done by you.

In addition to this, each class of ship in Stellaris has not only has a unique level of evasiveness, but also strengths against weapons of different sizes.

All these must come into play while designing your Stellaris fleet so that you are able to counter almost everything that comes your way.

Our Stellaris fleet building guide details weapons/armor counters, tips to build a successful Stellaris fleet, and how to create a perfectly balanced fleet:

Do it Yourself!
When it comes to space combat, the first thing that you need to do is not to go with AI ship designs. While the AI designs may appear decent to some players out there, you should always do it yourself!

Keep Newton’s Third Law in Mind
In Stellaris, each weapon and armor have counters that must be kept in mind during space combat. This is one of the main reasons why you should not go with AI designed ships since it does not consider these things. With that being said, here are some of the counters that I think you should be aware of:

  • Energy Weapon – Weak to shields, but can deal with armor
  • Kinetic Weapon – Weak to armor, but can deal with shields
  • Missiles – Work against both shields and armor, but can be dealt with point defense systems

Understanding Ships in Stellaris
Each class of ship in Stellaris has a unique level of evasiveness and strengths different-sized weapons. What you basically need to know is that the smaller you are, the harder you are to hit.

For example, Bombers and Fighters are hard to hit and must be shot at by small weapons. Corvettes are easily targeted by small weapons, Destroyers are easily hit by small and medium weapons, and Cruisers as well as Battleships can be hit by almost anything.

Keeping this in mind, it is a good idea to come up with as balanced of a fleet as possible. In case you are looking to counter all comers effectively, you should try to have the most up-to-dated weapons coupled with specialists.

In order to do so, you need to make half of each class specialized. For example, for every 3 regular laser boats, you need to have 1 torpedo boat, 1 dedicated point defense ship, and 1 kinetic weapons ship. This will essentially allow you to deal with all comers as efficiently as possible.
