AMD Hint at the Possibility of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Price Drops
At this year’s CES there has been a lot of look at the future of technology. AMD have also been talking about more current hardware in the form of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
In a round-table conversation with AMD’s CEO Lisa Su, TechRadar were able to get a few quotes about the current generation consoles which may interest people looking to buy one in the future. In the conversation she discussed the possibility of a price drop in the consoles because of the reducing cost of chip production:
“The consoles work on a five to seven year strategy, that’s the lifetime for these consoles,” said Su.
“Without talking about any particular party’s console – there will be opportunities to cost-reduce.
“Consoles tend to be very sensitive to price point, we see that as price comes down console [sales] volume goes up, and that will afford an opportunity to do that in this cycle.”
While there is no talk of a timescale when this reduction in price may occur it still makes for interesting reading. While it is safe to assume that price drops will inevitably come, if production costs can lead to a noticeable drop in the cost of the new consoles it may become easier to purchase them.
What this means in reality is for those who have yet to make the move to the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, it would be easier for them to do so. For those who want to own both consoles, a cheaper console will also make that move easier too.
When do you think this price drop will happen? Or will Sony and Microsoft look to hold off on such a cut? Let us know your thoughts below.
