Steam Sold Games Worth $3.5B in 2015; Controls 15% of PC Market!
We know Valve Corporation hit the homerun with Steam because it was just the right thing to expand their business beyond game making. Now, the digital distribution service controls as much as 15 percent of the PC gaming market single-handedly!
New data regarding their sales statistics and trends has been shared by SteamSpy where a gigantic figure of $3.5 billion was revealed in terms of revenue the platform generated from selling paid PC games in the year 2015.
The entire PC gaming market is estimated to be valued at about $27 billion, and 15 percent of that being held by a single entity speaks volumes about Valve’s positioning in the market.
What makes it even more interesting is the fact that this is just for the paid games and the market covered by them with DLC and free games is an entirely different topic.
In terms of games itself, the number of titles brought on platform by Steam was 3000 as compared to 1900 from the year before it. The number of copies sold in 2015 was also justified by this as people bought about 350 million paid games!
This figure has also gone up exponentially over the previous years and that is mostly due to the increase in the user base of the service. Starting from eight million, they went up to 12 million concurrent users.
Last but not the least, although the monthly game releases on Steam were at an all time high in December, the ballooned numbers of indie releases is stabilizing now and charts are also dominated by major AAA titles.
GTA 5 and Fallout 4 were the most popular and most successful games followed by titles like Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and ARK Survival Evolved, CS:GO, Rocket League, The Witcher 3 and even H1Z1.
