Halo 5: Guardians is a success for Microsoft, and it looks like the microtransactions in the game are also adding to it. As was promised, any income made from the REQ packs that can be purchased in the game go into the pot for the Halo World Championship.

In a blog to update players, the developer of the game 343 Industries have revealed that $500,000 has already been made through these REQ packs, and they term them as “crowdfunding” to go to the victory pot that was already $1,000,000. It wouldn’t be a surprise if this rises to $2,000,000 in no time the way people are buying the packs.

The REQ packs come in silver, gold and premium and unlock weapons, armour, and vehicles for use in the Warzone mode. They cost $1.99, $2.99, and $24.99 respectively. Obviously people are finding uses for them and are enjoying the game. With the fact that they can see where the money is going is this better than just making the games developer and publisher more profit?

After the Halo World Championship ends, it will be interesting to see where the money goes then. Will it go into the pot for next year’s games? Or will it go into profits for the game makers? This will obviously be for 343 Industries to decide. Though I’m not sure they will be able to call it “crowdfunding” then.

While microtransactions are controversial, they are definitely around to stay and are making plenty of money, so people are obviously using them. It looks like they are now a necessary evil for many games like this now.

Do you buy REQ packs to be used in Halo 5: Guardians? Are they value for money? Let us know your thoughts on them below.
