Insomniac Games Getting Staff For More PlayStation Exclusives, Spider-Man 2 Anyone?

Sony has posted new job listings for Audio Designers to work on an Insomniac Games project, which is likely to be a PlayStation exclusive Spider-Man 2.

The first job post appeared on LinkedIn two days ago for a Senior Audio Designer. The second job is for an Audio Designer (FXT)”. Both jobs are more or less similar. The job responsibilities are as follows:

“Responsible for being an active and key contributor for the creative direction and style for audio assets and workflow processes throughout a production cycle. Creates, edits, and implements game-ready audio. Works closely with the rest of the audio team to maintain a high level of quality and consistency of assets.”

Now right off the bat, there are a couple of interesting things to note:

A Sony PlayStation Exclusive Game:

The job is posted by PlayStation as a fixed term contract for Insomniac Games. This basically means that the person they hire as a Senior Audio Designer will work onsite at Insomniac Game Studios with their development team but will be under contract by Sony’s PlayStation. This still means that Insomniac is independent of Sony. You won’t be hired by Insomniac Games, it just means you would be working at the studios but on contract by Sony for a PlayStation Exclusive.

This heavily implies that the game Insomniac is working on will be a PlayStation exclusive with Sony Interactive Entertainment being the publisher. It is quite possible that this title is Spider-Man 2 since Spider-Man PS4 was also developed by Insomniac Games and published exclusively by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Spider-Man 2 Release Date

During a game’s development cycle, one of the first things the studio works on is a narrative which is followed by voice/motion capture. The Audio Design team works extensively with the vocal crew to mix audio with the assets provided by the design team. Usually, the Audio Design team has to do the heavy lifting in the initial stages of videogame production which they polish and perfect during the later stages.

If Sony and Insomniac Games have just begun hiring Audio Designers for their upcoming project, it means the game development is still in its early stages. It took Insomniac approximately four years to create Spider-Man PS4. If this new game is indeed Spider-Man 2, this means Insomniac already has parts of the narrative down thanks to the first game. It also means that it will probably take another year and a half for production to go into its final stages. So Spider-Man 2 release date could still be far off.

In short, you can expect another year or two for Spider-Man 2’s release date.

Keep an open mind

At this point, nothing is confirmed. We know that Insomniac Games is working on a Spider-Man PS4 sequel. We know which villains are likely to be in Spider-Man 2. But we don’t know when the game will release or how it will look or what scale it’s going to be. Neither Sony nor Insomniac has confirmed anything. It is entirely possible that this game isn’t Spider-Man at all, it could be another Ratchet and Clank.  So it is best to keep an open mind and treat all of this with a grain of salt.

Spider-Man is now available to play on PlayStation 4.
