Will Playstation 5 Backwards Compatibility Be Available On Its Release?

Sean Layden of Playstation went on record some time ago and confirmed that a Playstation 5 console would be coming in the future. But with that news out, should Playstation 5 backwards compatibility be something that Playstation should look at in the future? Especially considering the Xbox One’s own backwards compatibility system?

The Xbox One was announced to be getting backwards compatibility back in 2014 at Microsoft’s E3 conference, and in the four years since then its backwards compatibility library has expanded to encompass both less well-known and well-received games, and classics like Mass Effect, Gears of War, Bayonetta, and more.

The Playstation 4 doesn’t have anything like that, and it’s been outright said that Playstation doesn’t intend on doing anything similar in the future. But will that all change if we get Playstation 5 backwards compatibility?

The Playstation 4 has gotten a lot of good games since it released back in 2013, such as Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, and soon God of War, Days Gone, Death Stranding, and other games like it. And that’s not even getting into all of the classic games that have been on Playstation games before.

A Playstation 5 backwards compatibility service could allow Playstation to get all of its most classic titles and series onto the console, ranging from classics like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and Jak and Daxter, to other more recent games like Killzone, Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 4 and 5, Final Fantasy games, and more.

While Playstation’s recent spate of remastered games like the N Sane Collection for Crash Bandicoot, the rumored Spyro remakes, the Jak and Daxter remakes, and the Uncharted Collection have shown that they still want to make use of their old properties, we may not get an actual backwards compatibility service like Microsoft does.

However, the Playstation 5 is likely still a long way off, and Sony’s thoughts about Playstation 5 backwards compatibility may change in the future.
