The Witness Sold Over 100,000 Copies, Makes $5 Million in First Week

The mind-melting puzzle game called “The Witness” has sold over 100,000 copies on PlayStation 4 and PC. Thekla Inc. has made $5 million in gross revenue during its first week on sale.

The developer noted that sales were very strong on both platforms even though The Witness was among highly pirated games on PC. Piracy was such an issue that Jonathan Blow haD to come out and warn folks that at this rate, he may not be able to afford his next title.

However, I think with 5 million dollars in his pocket, he sure can afford another game. Still, it would’ve been nice to make money on each and copy that was pirated. One can only imagine how much revenue will come of it then.

But some things just aren’t possible and piracy isn’t going anywhere, at least for the next 2 years.

Anyways, The Witness sales summary was shared in a post:

Across all platforms, The Witness has totalled over $5 million USD gross revenue in the first week, and it has sold substantially more than 100,000 units.

This is a good chunk more revenue in one week than Braid made in its entire first year, from August 2008-September 2009. (Braid initially launched on XBLA in August 2008, and it came to Steam in April 2009). Braid was considered a hit independent game at the time.

The Witness released on PSN and PC for $39.99. Thekla Inc. is also looking into bringing The Witness to more platforms including Xbox One, Android, iOS and Mac OS X.
