The Outer World Flaws System Will Be Mandatory In Supernova

The Outer Worlds is the next step in RPG storytelling games made by the company Obsidian Entertainment. You may know Obsidian from games like Fallout New Vegas which set a precedent in RPG mechanics. As such, the Outer Worlds is taking roleplaying to the next level. How? With this implemented flaw system.

Here’s a video showcasing how the system works exactly and what purpose it serves.

Now before knowing exactly about the flaws system, we talked about the Supernova difficulty. One that included permanent death and other familiar features from the hardcore difficulty of Fallout New Vegas.

One thing that Supernova specifically highlighted in this video is that picking up flaws will be mandatory. Flaws themselves are negative attributes that affect your character based on either repeated incidents or one horrible one. I’m assuming taking a lot of fall damage will result in a fear of heights, for example.

The Outer Worlds wants to allow a player to immerse and insert in their own characters as much as possible. This includes being able to pick their weaknesses and strengths. With Supernova, however, the game will probably pick the weaknesses for you. The only way you can prevent it is by not screwing up.

The video itself specifically showcased how a player can get paranoia around restricted access areas. The flaw triggers if you get caught sneaking around enough times, so be sure not to have butter fingers when handling delicate matters.

The difficulty is purely optional, however. It’s purpose is to make the game as hardcore and unforgiving as possible. This includes having hunger, weather and other physical conditions you need to take care of. It also highlights how much you need to fear dying in this game since you’ll potentially lose pretty much all of your progress.

The flaws system can be very specific with what flaw you get and when. Though I could quickly see this feature getting very annoying in Supernova. The permadeath could be caused by an unknown glitch. Similarly, buggy AI in a stealth segment could unfairly give your character paranoia. And you have no say in the matter.

The Outer Worlds releases on October 25th 2019. The game will be available on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
