The Long Dark Travelling Guide

This Long Dark Travelling Guide will help players travel between different areas in The Long Dark and also highlight some of the useful environmental markers they should keep in mind in order to make sure they are going the right way.

The playable map in The Long Dark is pretty big, especially by singleplayer survival standards, featuring a world size of around 50 square kilometers for players to explore and survive in.

Of course, given its size, it can take some time to travel between different regions of the map and if players don’t know where they are going, it is easy to get lost in the wilderness.

The Long Dark Travelling

Mystery Lake to Coastal Highway

In the middle of the frozen lake is an island sitting next to a peninsula. Stand between them with the island on your left and the peninsula on your right, facing west. Head across the lake and the Camp Office will be further up the shore on your left.

Keep heading in that direction and you will run across some train tracks. Players need to turn right and follow the tracks until they cross the area with derailed trains. Once players cross the Train Bridge, they will come up on the Carter Hydro Dam which is a really useful place to seek shelter and gather resources.

Pass by the dam and keep following the train tracks until you are prompted to “Leave Mystery Lake” and enter the Ravine. Keep following the train tracks. There is a small snow drift that covers a portion of the tracks just before another train bridge, but if you keep heading forward you shouldn’t get lost.

When you see the red train cars ahead, turn right and cross the river. Players need to approach these red train cars until they reach a ledge with a Frozen Corpse and a backpack on it. A fallen tree on the ledge can lead them to the top of the train cars.

Once across the gap, players can head right and up the hill to reach more train tracks. Continuing to follow these will take the players to a tunnel which leaves the area and players enter Coastal Highway. Players can simply retrace their steps to go back to Mystery Lake if they need to.

Mystery Lake to Pleasant Valley

The initial traveling part for this is the same as when traveling to Coastal Highway. Once players reach Carter Hydro Dam, they need to head inside, enter the doorway to the large room and then cross the doorway to the left to reach a passage with red walls. Following this passage takes players to a large area with huge machines inside it.

A door in the far left corner of the room will let players leave Upper Dam. Once players do that, they will be in another red passage which leads to a small room with a door on the left closed by a push bar. This door leaves the Lower Dam and players enter the Winding River.

You will be standing on a fenced-in platform. There is a gap in the fence to the right. Head down the stairs and toward the snowy trail. Follow the trail along the cliffside, and it should lead you to the frozen river at the base of the dam. Turn right, walking with the dam behind you on the frozen river. When you will come to a fork in the river, take the right-hand path and follow the frozen river.

Soon players will hit a dead end with a path on the right which they need to follow. This again leads to the river and following the river will lead to a cave which will let players exit the Winding River area. Crossing the caves will lead to Pleasant Valley. Players can simply retrace these steps if they need to return to Mystery Lake.

From Mystery Lake to Forlorn Muskeg

Make your way towards the Camp Office across Mystery Lake. You will know you’re heading the right way if you see a small island to your left and various camp buildings behind you. Once you reach there, head towards the train tracks to your left. Go along the tracks until you reach the Rail Tunnel which has a log car blocking the entrance. Go around the log car to enter the tunnel and leave Mystery Lake.

From Mystery Lake to Mountain Town

After reaching the rail tunnel you should turn right from the train cars. Make your way along the rock wall on the left until you reach a large rock. Then head down the slope to your right until you reach the barren barn. You will come across a clearing with the Trapper’s Cabin in its center. From there you will spot another hill to your left. Follow the hill to a cave which will prompt you to “Leave Mystery Lake.”

Go along the tunnel of the cave until you reach a right turn and then pass through the room that has three columns. Eventually you will reach a sharp right turn in the tunnel that leads to a huge room filled with snow. Go to the right side and along the cave wall until you reach a split in the path. From there you should head right and keep going further until you reach the cave exit

Coastal Highway to Pleasant Valley

Players need to be well prepared in terms of light sources for this journey as they will be crossing some mines and caves. To start off, they need to stand on the main highway with the coast to their right and follow the road until they reach the Quonset Gas Station. There is a small path through the rocks in this area which leads to the other side.

Soon, players will come up on a log barrier, which they should keep on the right and continue along the path as the terrain becomes hilly and players can see log barriers on either side. Eventually, players will reach a collection of cabins from where they can turn right and follow the faint path which leads to a blue trailer.

Make a sharp right and keep going up the hill, following the path between the rocks. The path will run into another snow-covered road with log retaining walls. Turn left, following the log barriers along the left. You will run straight into an abandoned mine entrance which will prompt you to “Leave Coastal Highway.” Inside the mine is a large room by the entrance, but head straight through and you will come to a tunnel.

At the first fork in the tunnel, turn right. You will come to a room with a gated section. Cross the room and take the tunnel on the right. At the next fork, turn left. You should come to a room with a workbench.

Head across the room and enter the tunnel on the right. Keep going right at the next fork. The tunnel will lead to a room with a set of wooden stairs circling up and to the right. At the top of the stairs, enter the tunnel on the left and follow it uphill. Stay to the left at the next intersection until you reach Pleasant Valley.

Coastal Highway to Desolation Point

Keeping the coastline to the right and traveling along the road will lead players to the Coastal Townsite. Following the road going past the town, players will see a pink car to the left which is a good marker that they are on the right track.

Soon enough, they will reach Commuter’s Lament where a snowy path on the left will lead them out of Coastal Highway and on to the Crumbling Highway. Following this damaged road will take players to a large rock blocking the road with a small gap through which the players can pass through.

After crossing the rock, There will be a barrier preventing you from getting to the road itself, but follow the barrier till it ends and you will meet up with the road again.

Backtrack a few steps along the road toward the blue truck and head down the snowy path beside the truck. The path will lead to a mine entrance in the rock face on your right, and the mine will prompt you to “Leave Crumbling Highway.” Inside the No. 3 Coal Mine, follow the tunnel until you come to a partial collapse.

Duck to crawl through the collapse, and immediately on the other side, you will be confronted with your first fork in the tunnel. Take the left-hand path and follow it until you reach a larger room. On the left side of the room will be a workbench and another tunnel. Take that tunnel and follow it downhill. There will be a beam to duck under at one point, and eventually, the tunnel will split again. Take the tunnel to the right, and at the mine entrance you will be prompted to “Leave Mine.”

From Pleasant Valley to Mystery Lake

With the Pleasant Valley Farmstead on your left, you should make your way across the Heartbreak Bridge and into the frozen riverbed. Follow it until you reach Lonely Falls and then make your way up the hill to the top of them. Follow the river further ahead and then exit it on the bank to the left once you spot a bridge. You must now circle around the rocks until you find a road covered in snow. There is another bridge to the right so cross it and then head up the slope to the left.

Make you way up the hill and then turn left from the fallen tree in the center of the path. You must then follow the snowy ledge along the cliff until you find a cave entrance. Go down and make your way through the tunnel until you find a few boards that you use to cross a gap. Once you’re across, you must take the left-hand path and head down a small incline. From there, turn left and circle up before going right. Go straight from the snowy patch on the ground until you reach a large room that splits into two tunnels. You should head to the one on the left and proceed until you find the cave exit.

Head down the snow filled path to reach the Winding River and then turn right while following it.  You will spot a hill on your left that you must climb up and then follow the path until you’re at the river again. Turn left and follow the river to reach Carter Hydro Dam ahead of you. From there you will spot another snow filled path by some trees that goes upwards to so follow it while keeping to the right. You will soon reach some stairs going up to a platform with another platform on the far right. You must make your way along the narrow ledge to the other platform and once you get there; head up the stairs to your left. Enter the dam through the broken window.

Walk into the room to your and then left into the following room. You will spot some stairs to your left that you must descend to reach a large room. Pass through it and walk through the passage that leads to a metal wheel. Once you reach the wheel, turn left and into the next passage which will take you to a metal door that you can use to exit the Lower Dam area. You will find yourself in a large room filled with stairs and machinery. There is another passage further up ahead which leads to a room filled with lockers. Enter that room and then walk through the entrance on the right that has a broken door to exit the Upper Dam area and reach Mystery Lake.

From Pleasant Valley to Coastal Highway

Once you’re across, you should follow the road past Contemplation Bridge and then jump to the hidden road on your right. Turn left from the fallen tree and head up to the top of the hill. You must now follow the cliffside path on the right until you reach the abandoned mine entrance.

Enter the mine and then go right from the first fork in the tunnel. Head down the stairs on the right and you will spot a tunnel to your left that you must proceed through. You will reach an area with a workbench and another tunnel on the left side. Head into the tunnel and head right from the fork. Once you reach the gated area uphill, you can head around the gate and go through the tunnel on the right. You will come across a fork so head left until you reach the Costal Highway

Pleasant Valley to Timberwolf Mountains

To begin, players need to stand in front of the Pleasant Valley Farmstead with the silo on their left. In the distance, they will see a wooden structure and should head towards that to reach Heartbreak Ridge.

Once there, they need to turn left and cross the bridge and follow the road further until they cross a tan car near the Pleasant Valley Outbuildings. After crossing another bridge and passing through Rural Crossroads, players will reach another road covered by snow that leads towards Derelict Cabins.

Players need to pass the cabins and move towards the large rocks in the distance until they reach two paths in the snow covered road. They need to take the one on the right and continue up the hill to reach an unnamed bridge which leads to some hills.

Taking the steeper path to the right will lead players to a dip between the two hills until they reach a large depression in the land. Players need to continue along until they can see some buildings on the right and head towards those.

Soon, players will see a climbing rope on a Cliffside which they need to climb and reach the top. However, ropes should only be climbed if players are well rested and have full stamina.

If not, players should take a quick nap with the Bedroll inside some small building. Once at the top of the cliff, reaching the first fork in the tunnel ahead will take players outside of Pleasant Valley. They need to take the left-hand path until they reach a larger room with a work bench and tunnel leading outside of it.

Taking this tunnel and following it downhill will eventually lead players to another splitting tunnel with the path on the right leading outside the Mines. They need to take this path to reach Timberwolf Mountains.

From Desolation Point to Coastal Highway

There is a bridge by a waterfall which you should stand on. Make sure the falls are to your right while the lighthouse is what you’re facing. Proceed past the lighthouse until you reach a log barrier on the right side of the road along with a truck. There is a trailer a bit ahead of the truck so once you reach there; turn left and head uphill. Make your way up while keeping yourself near the snow banks and rock walls to your right. Once the rock face curves right, you will find the abandoned mine entrance.

Enter the mine and then head left at the first fork in the tunnel. Once you reach the next T junction, head right until you reach the room with a workbench and two tunnels in it. Head to the one on the right and then keep circling to the left until you find another tunnel with a T-junction in it. Go right and you will find a tunnel with a hole for you to crawl through and exit the mine.

You will now be at the Crumbling Highway. Turn left immediately after you exit the mine and head downhill before turning right at the highway. You will then reach the Road Collapse so circle right around it as you go down the slope until you meet up with the highway again. Proceed along the raod until you come across a huge boulder on the road. Duck under it and follow the road until you reach the Coastal Highway.

From Timberwolf Mountain to Pleasant Valley

Look left from behind the first engine and head along the ice filled trail by the mountainside. You will come across a snow filled ledge so head down the steep path to its left. Once you’re down, follow the trees on the left toward a bunch of rocks ahead. There is a rope you can use to descend down to the bottom and then head right to follow the rock wall. You will then reach Crystal Lake.

From Forlorn Muskeg to Mountain Town

Head right and follow the railroad tracks after exiting the train car at the Poacher’s Camp. Once you reach the train cars near the tunnel, you should circle around them to the right and make our way along the tracks. There is a cliff face on your left once you turn right from the tunnel. Go along it until it turns sharply to the left. You can then enter an alcove that leads you to an area with a Mountaineering Rope that you can use to climb to the top of the cliff. If there is no rope then you should deploy one yourself.

Once you’re at the top of the cliff, make you way uphill until you reach some trees by a cave. Head left on the path next to the cave and you will find a cliff you can climb up via the roots on it. When you reach the top, you will spot a huge stone arch that will take you to Milton Basin.

Make your way across the Basin to the left-hand shore. Once you’re at the mouth of the river, you need to make your way across until you reach the waterfall. The path on the left will lead you to a rope to get you to the top. Keep moving up until you find another rope by a ledge. Once you’ve climbed up, you should head down the hill to the frozen river. You can then follow it to Mountain Town.

Head to the road security bar and circle around it to get to the road with telephone lines all around it. Follow the road until you reach the railway tracks and then turn left to follow the tracks until you reach the wreckage of a train. Once you’re at the debris then head right towards the hill. Go uphill until you’re between a large rock and log barrier before continuing along the tracks. This will bring you to the Landslide so here you need to make your way along the snow filled patches as you head up and then left. Now you need to head right as you go down the rocky slope to the train tracks. Turn left and eventually you will reach a train tunnel prompting to Forlorn Muskeg.

From Mountain Town to Mystery Lake

From the house on the hill in Milton town, make your way to the water tower directly ahead and then turn left towards the road heading out of town. Once you reach the Orca Gas Station, you need to turn right to the road behind it and then turn right towards Milton Park once you reach the blue truck.

Turn right from the bulletin board you come across and then head uphill.  You will find a bunch of buildings up there so head towards the cliff edge with a rope tied to a rock. It is by the picnic area. As you head down, you will find another rope that you can use to make your way to the top of the ledge. Once you’re on top, head left and make your way to the ledge past the fallen log. That will take you uphill to a waterfall. From there you need to head right along the frozen river and then left from the second waterfall you encounter. Enter the cave and then turn left at the first intersection. Turn right at the next one to exit to Mystery Lake.

From Mountain Town to Forlorn Muskeg

From the house on the hill in Milton town, make your way to the four-way intersection and head right towards a road that will take you to a bridge. There is a hill to the left side of the bridge so make you way up and then down the slope that takes you to the frozen riverbed.

Turn left and follow the river until you reach a fork by a huge rock. Go left and leave the riverbank once you reach another large rock by the cliff face on the right-hand riverbank. Head uphill until you come across a rope on the mountain to take you down. Once you’ve descended, head towards a second rope across the cliff before climbing down and making your way to the bottom of the slope where there is a waterfall.

Go left as you follow the riverbed and eventually the frozen lake will show up in front of you. Stick by the right-hand side of the shoreline and past the Hermit’s Cabin. You will eventually reach a stone arch to take you to Forlorn Muskeg
