Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick Defends Epic Games Store Exclusivity

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently commented on Epic Games Store exclusives and the announcement of Google’s Stadia, during the Q4 2019 earnings conference call.

According to Zelnick, the exclusive titles on Epic Games Store will occur infrequently and only for a limited period of time. The reference is clearly pointing towards 2K Game’s Borderlands 3, whose PC version will release on Steam six months after the game’s launch on Epic Store (September 13).

In terms of supporting the Epic Games Store, look, we think, as I said earlier, more distribution is a good thing. And while it’s rare that we’ll do exclusives for any period of time, we will continue to support Steam with our titles, with catalog. And these titles will be going to steam relatively quickly after their initial availability exclusively on the Epic Games Store.

In short, Zelnick has confirmed that the company will continue to support Steam in the future. Interestingly, it’s worth noticing that Take-Two through its subsidiaries like 2K Games and Private Division has three different games in development that will release a year early on Epic Store before launching on Steam.

These games include Gearbox Software’s Borderlands 3, Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds and Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey developed by Panache Digital Games.

Meanwhile, Zelnick took the opportunity to talk about upcoming game streaming services. Zelnick said that he’s very over-optimistic about Google Stadia and its ability to stream games on any device.

You know the promise of being able to sign on to a service with virtually no barriers, without a box in between, and being able to play our games on any device whatsoever around the world, and to do it with low latency, well that’s very compelling if that can be delivered, and the folks at Google minimally have said it will be delivered and will be delivered in relatively short order.

Zelnick then went on to say that the company wants to be where the consumer is so they’ll support new entrants. “We’ll support new entrants and we are a believer in streaming services. Again, you know we need to have business models that make sense for us. So far, we’re pretty optimistic.”

According to the statement, Take-Two seems to be already working on releasing games for Google’s Stadia, when it launches at the end of this year.

Apart from these topics, Take-Two Interactive revealed recording breaking sale figures of its published titles for the fiscal year ended on March 31, 2019. The publisher announced that Red Dead Redemption 2 developed by Rockstar Games has shipped over 24 Million copies.

As expected, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V still continues to perform well as the game has shipped over 110 million copies worldwide, leaving behind every other game.

The future is looking very bright for Take-Two Interactive and the CEO has also confirmed that the company is ready to welcome next-gen consoles like Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Scarlett.
