Supposed Red Dead Redemption 2 Screenshot Was Actually Wild West Online

Yesterday we posted a story about a possible Red Dead Redemption 2 screenshot that had been posted on the official Grand Theft Auto forums and started a huge debate. However, it turns out that the screenshot actually belongs to Wild West Online, an MMO that was only revealed today.

PC Gamer is the one responsible for dishing the goods about Wild West Online, and including information about the game’s Kickstarter campaign, aimed at $250,000 in order to help speed development.

Development is already well underway however (as you could probably tell from the fact that it has screenshots), and the Kickstarter money is going to be used to add in more features. For example, if 1.7 million dollars is raised then the game gets train robberies.

The Wild West Online screenshot that was posted yesterday was apparently posted by some sort of prankster who wanted people to think it was actually a screenshot for Red Dead Redemption 2. However, it did fulfill one purpose: it drummed up some press for Wild West Online.

Apparently, Wild West Online won’t be a conventional MMO; instead, each one of its individual “server shards” will end up holding several hundred people instead of thousands, and those players will be forced to cooperate or die trying. Whether this means players can be bandits while others can hunt them down or some other form of gameplay, remains to be seen.

Either way, we may see some more of the MMO when E3 rolls around, possibly at the PC conference, unless the gameplay studio isn’t coming for it.

However, the resemblance to Red Dead Redemption 2 is actually intentional. Wild West Online’s developer 621 Games are actually fans of the series, who decided to take matters into their own hands after not finding a satisfactory answer about Red Dead getting a PC release.

Either way, we’ll have to see how bot WWO and Red Dead 2 look, hopefully at E3.
