We live in a day and age where every action RPG with good combat mechanics that involve dodging and slashing is compared to Dark Souls. This is probably due to the Souls series being the first mainstream game in a while to popularize that style of gameplay. That doesn’t mean that the gameplay method is owned by Dark Souls. In fact, when it comes to Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, gameplay mechanics aren’t even remotely similar.
Jedi Fallen Order gameplay is combat focused but that doesn’t make it a Dark Souls clone. In fact, Jedi Fallen Order is more reminiscent of past Star Wars games, such as the Force Unleashed. Or even the Revenge of the Sith video game.
Of course, with the passage of time and today’s technology, the game feels more grounded and realistic as opposed to the usual cartoony physics that we’ve seen in past games. Still, the gameplay itself may share some common traits with Dark Souls, but what action RPG game doesn’t nowadays?
If anything, I would compare Jedi Fallen Order to Uncharted. Both are linear story driven games that provide a cinematic experience with a chapping lad of a protagonist. Furthermore, both games have semi-open mission areas along with enemies to fight and puzzles to solve. If that doesn’t remind anybody of Uncharted, I don’t know what would.
Respawn Entertainment is responsible for bringing us this new chapter in Star Wars saga. Albeit it’s in a timeline of events we’re familiar with but now shown from a new perspective. You play as a Padawan that survived the initial onslaught of Order 66 and are now among the very first to combat the Imperial takeover. I’m sure this is before the Rebellion was even formed and if this is the same canon as the EU, Galen Marek hasn’t even been found by Vader yet.
Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order is developed by Respawn Entertainment and produced by EA under a license from Disney. The game will release later this year in November 2019.
