Sony to Release a Mobile Projector for Playstation 4

Sony are releasing a new mobile projector for the Playstation 4 that will be released in October 2015, but will it provide a strong enough image quality?

With the current generation consoles, and the PC, offering better resolutions the screens we play our games on get bigger and bigger. We can’t always afford the latest televisions, or even projectors to play our games on, but Sony may be able to help us with this.

Geekculture have been able to look at a new Playstation 4 mobile projector that Sony will be releasing, which was demonstrated using the Playstation 4 exclusive game Until Dawn and were able to collect some details about the projector itself. These include:

  • Uses Laser Technology.
  • Auto Focus and Free Focus modes.
  • Projectable screen of around 120 inches.
  • 1920 x 720 resolution.
  • HDMI/MHL connection.
  • Small internal speaker, but outputs available to connect to a headset or external stereo speakers (through stereo headphones jack.)
  • The size of the device is comparable to two Sony Xperia phones stacked together, so small.

The release date for the projector is aimed at October 2015. No price has been announced yet, which is something we obviously need to know.

What wasn’t commented on was what the quality of the image projecte was, what environment it will work in (darkness of the room etc.) and why is the resolution 1920 x 720? I’m sure we’ll get the answers to these in the future but they obviously spring to mind straight away.

sony-projector-2If the mini projector is set at a low enough price, this will be an interesting option for playing the Playstation 4, and make it easier to play the console in places where there isn’t access to a television, or a big enough screen to show off your games the best. This is where quality of projection becomes an issue though. Can a projector this small provide an image of sufficient quality? It will be an interesting alternative to remote play on the Vita.

I’m sure once we see more details about the mobile projector all of our questions will be answered.
