Sony Shipped 63.3 Million PS4 Units By June 30 But, Operating Income Dropped Significantly

Sony’s PlayStation 4 has been dominating the console market this generation since it was launched and the console is showing no signs of slowing down. Sony expects the PS4 to be as successful as the PS2 and it seems that the console might achieve it as Sony has revealed the total shipped units for PlayStation 4.

During the company’s recent earnings call for the first quarter of the current fiscal year, the company revealed that it has shipped 63.3 million PS4 units till June 30, 2017. The figures are 3.3 million up from March 30 at which point Sony had shipped 60 million units of PS4.

However, PS4 units shipped declined slightly year-over-year as Sony Interactive Entertainment shipped 3.5 million PS4 units during the first quarter of the last fiscal year. While things are looking good but, Sony revealed that Operating Income dropped significantly compared to the same period last fiscal year.

However, PlayStation 4 is not the only console in the market that has reported good results regarding its units shipped. According to Nintendo, Nintendo Switch shipped 4.7 million units till June 30, 2017. As for the software sales for the hybrid console, they stand at 13.60 million units of which 3.92 million units were Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and 3.54 million units were Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

In related news, while PlayStation 4 has been doing quite well but, according to a report, Sony is already looking into PlayStation 5. The report suggests that Sony will announce the PlayStation 5 at E3 2018 and the console will launch in late 2019.

Furthermore, according to Sony, the success of PlayStation 4 Pro could increase the users’ expectation for PS5. Jim Ryan, Global Head of Marketing & Sales for PlayStation, said that if PlayStation 4 Pro is successful, this could raise the expectations for PlayStation 5.
