SegmentNext Awards: Best Wii U Game of 2013

Take a look at what we believe is the Best Wii U Game of 2013.

The one thing that distinguishes Nintendo from other companies is that they seem to accomplish the task of creating something repeatedly without getting stale. They’ve done it several times with Zelda, and the team behind Super Mario Galaxy has demonstrated that they’re just as capable of doing the same with Mario.

I just can’t get enough of Mario and fortunately Nintendo always successfully manages to deliver a whole new experience; keeping the nostalgic appeal intact.

And this is why Super Mario 3D World is our Best Wii U Game of 2013.

In Super Mario 3D World, your task does not include rescuing Princess Peach as it is not her who has been abducted by Bowser. Instead, she will accompany you as you set out on your journey to rescue Sprixies.

You will be able to choose from Peach, Mario, Luigi, Toad, etc. Each of these characters has their own distinctive skills.

As far as visuals are concerned, the game has managed to utilize the power of Wii U. It features stunning visual presentation mixed with the game’s chaste appeal and HD resolution.

Comparing it to the previous titles, you will notice better depth-of-field blurring, more lightening effects, and lens flares. However, the best thing is the smooth frame-rates. The game runs on a 60 frames per second.

The game also features a decent multiplayer experience with four players jumping in the action; though the things can get a little messier with four characters and loads of enemies. Nonetheless, it indeed is a lot of fun; especially once you get hold of things.

It aims at creating an amalgam of 2D and 3D elements so as to appeal to bigger audience, and the developer has achieved it to some extent.

There are also some notable alterations in the gameplay, for instance, you can’t no longer perform a double or triple jump or measuring your character’s running speed. It might take some time to get used to these changes but one eventually gets hold of them.

Super Mario 3D World can be regarded as one of the best Mario platformers ever created! You may not find it as good as Super Mario 64 or Galaxy, but it’ll worth your investment of time and money.

Runner-Up: Pikmin 3 isn’t a title like Super Mario 3D World for which I would even recommend getting a Wii U but it’s no less fun. This RTS is developed and published by Nintendo exclusively for Wii U.

Pikmin 3 is a direct sequel to 2004’s Pikmin 2 and sticks to the roots of its predecessors in terms of gameplay; with an incursion of a few novel elements.

Your task is to control three alien captains roaming the lands of PNF-404 in search of food (in the form of seeds) to fight overpopulation and fulfill their needs on their planet. During their time at PNF-404, they come across tiny creatures called Pikmin, who assist them get seeds and other necessary supplies.

The game is absolutely gorgeous with beautifully drawn characters and environments. Weather effects, character models, cut-scenes take the gameplay to a whole new level. However, expect to come across some soft textures here and there.

I would definitely recommend getting it if you already own a Wii U. The game surely is Nintendo’s chef-d’oeuvre.
