New Patent By Sony Hints at PS5 Backwards Compatibility

A recent patent by Sony tells us that PS5 will probably have backwards compatibility built in. Total of 2 new patents have been registered. Sony wants to include new technologies in PS5 such as Vertical Synchronization (or V-Sync) and a technology supporting backwards compatibility.

This backward compatibility patent was filed way before and now has been finally updated. This patent is being called “Remastering by emulation”. It is from Sony Interactive Entertainment America LLC.

Summary of the patent is as follows.

Each asset such as a texture called for by legacy software such as a legacy computer game software has a unique identifier associated with it. The unique identifier can be rendered by imposing a hash on the asset, and then the asset stored with its identifier in a data structure. An artist remasters the textures for presentation on a higher resolution display than envisioned in the original software, and stores them back in the data structure with their identifiers. The original software is then played on the higher resolution display, with asset (such as texture) calls being intercepted, identified, and the data structure entered to retrieve the remastered asset having a matching identifier. The remastered asset is then inserted on the fly into the game presentation.

This texture patent has got approved recently. It is called “Video Frame Rate Compensation Through Adjustment of Vertical Blanking”. It allows Sony to combine hardware and software to achieve better frame rates in video games. V-Sync will be definitely a good new technology to have on consoles. Though for PC gamers, they are already familiar with it as it’s been here for some time. Seeing games running better on PS5 is definitely a welcome feature by gaming fans.

Now keep in mind that companies always intend to make patents all the time. But that doesn’t mean that it’s going to be a confirmed feature or change. We hope that it turns out to be true and PS5 does bring these two new features when it launches.

Microsoft has been doing a better job than Sony by bringing old games to the Xbox One. Sony is behind in this aspect. With backwards compatibility, Sony can achieve a lot more with PS5. At the end of the day, it’s definitely a good news for us all gamers.

In other news, it’s reported that Sony will bring big PSN changes with PS5. PS5 will also come with cross-play support at launch.
