Sony’s virtual reality headset gadget, the PlayStation VR (once known as Project Morpheus) could end up costing as much as a console system.
According to Bloomberg, PlayStation CEO Andrew House told them that the headset could cost as much as a new system. House did not give any concrete price figure, but his suggestion could raise eyebrows.
Sony released the PlayStation 4 almost two years ago for $400 and the PlayStation 3 was released in 2006 for $600. If what House is saying is accurate, it’s entirely possible that PlayStation VR could cost closer to the $400 mark.
This makes sense, as rival VR headset Oculus Rift is currently listed for $350 dollars, so Sony might try to compete at a similar price range, being able to afford a slightly higher price because of its compatibility with the console.
Sony had previously stated last year that their VR headset would be ‘affordable’, labeling the VR as a consumer grade device.
Of course, at the moment it’s just speculation based on what Andrew House said. PlayStation VR will is expected to go on sale in the first half of 2016. Sony has already stated that it plans to have around 10 titles available for the virtual reality system during its launch.
