Remember that you can engage enemies in a number of ways. An engagement occurs whenever you attack an enemy with a melee weapon at close range.

If a character manages to disengage, then the other character has a little bit of time in order to re-engage that enemy. There will be certain afflictions that will make some enemies immune to engagements and certain creatures will be able to engage multiple enemies at once.

Let us go ahead and take a look at the various different mechanics that are a part of the Combat System of Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire and how you can make the most of them when in combat.

Combat Tips and Tricks

Before we begin, remember that your Area of Effect Abilities can end up harming your own teammates too. This does not apply to all of the abilities, so check if the ability has an AoE radius or not.

If the ability lists an AoE radius in its description, then that means that the ability will deal damage to everyone and you should use it very carefully so as to ensure the safety of your own fighters.

Remember that all of the bonuses and the penalties that you get from your passive sources and/or weapons will stack together. The Active bonuses will utilize the highest bonus and the lowest penalty that is applicable on a particular statistic.

Apart from that, the Equipment Bonuses will do the same thing and will utilize only the highest bonuses along with the lowest penalties that are on a statistic.

However, afflictions work differently than the rest. If you have an affliction of a particular type and a newer affliction is applied of the same type, then the affliction will replace the previous one if the duration of the newer affliction is longer. Otherwise, the previous affliction will still be in effect.

There are different types of abilities that you can utilize. Passive Abilities are those that are added to a character and whatever bonus/advantage you are going to get will be given to you automatically over the course of time.

Active Abilities, on the other hand, are the ones which you have to decide when to use (timing is really important for active abilities and can be the difference between victory and defeat).

A Modal ability will cause an effect to occur for the duration that it is active. This could be a bonus for everyone near you or something that gives you better combat stats for a short amount of time. Remember that abilities can either be Per Encounter (can use them a specific number of times per battle) or Per Rest (can be used a specific number of times before they run out).

Injuries and Death
Death is an interesting aspect in Pillars of Eternity. When your character starts to glow red, it is at low health. When they are out of all health points, they will be knocked out.

However, they will be revived if you manage to win that battle. The only caveat is they will lose 25 percent of their maximum health. If a character dies 4 times, then it is permanently dead. You can rest your characters to reset their health bars.

Remember that if you are in a hectic fight, you have the opportunity to pause the game and then give orders to your characters. This is very useful as there will be numerous times when you are fighting at higher levels that the speed of the combat will be excessively much for you to react efficiently without pausing.

Remember that your enemies at a higher level will have a lot of tactics that will be hard to play against. One of the most prominent ones will be to focus on your weak characters such as your priests and your wizards.

These characters require your utmost attention and you need to ensure that you can protect them right from the very beginning. If they die, then chances are that you will end up losing the fight too.

General Tips and Tricks

Here are some general tips and tricks that can be useful to you when in the middle of combat.

Try to have a character on your team that can trap the enemy and deal damage to it while not being visible. This will be quite surprising for the enemy and will distract it as well so that your other units can go in and deal more damage of their own.

Remember to use your consumables during the battle, as they can be very important in turning its tide.

Some battles can be avoided, and many of them will be much more advantageous for you and your team if you avoid them. For that reason, try bribing, bluffing or intimidating your enemies before you attack them in certain cases.

Remember that you have multiple abilities at your disposal. During combat, it can be very easy to forget a few of those abilities and only spam a select few. Keep your options in mind when you are in combat to ensure maximum chances of success.

Lastly, hover your cursor over the enemy to see detailed information. This can be quite useful when dealing with special characters and can be used to plan.
