However, there are some who leave and do not like how Valve does things. There are people who left and there are others who were asked to leave by Valve. According to Gabe Newell, this has to do with the company’s internal structure.

That seems to be kind of a personality trait. Everybody thinks they want a lot of autonomy, and to be self-directed. Turns out that a lot of people don’t. So, you can have really capable, successful developers who won’t work well in this environment. And you really have to like customers, right.

Erik Johnson, a longtime Valve staffer added.

You have to be pretty egoless, too, You have to be pretty egoless to just do what customers ask you to do, right. You have to admit you’re wrong. Often.

Newell jumped back into the conversation:

If you’re not excited about making a mistake, right; if you don’t see that as an opportunity for improvement, that can trip people up. And there are plenty of great developers for whom this is a terrible place to work

Valve is a multi-billion dollar organization that has its fingers dipped in many different sectors of the industry. Whatever Valve is today is due to the way it works under Gabe Newell. It is different from other companies which can prove to be a deal breaker for some but for others, Valve is the perfect place to work.
