Paradox Interactive Opens Paradox Tectonic, New Studio Based In California

Swedish developer Paradox Interactive is spreading its wings a little, and has announced that it will be opening up a new game development studio called Paradox Tectonic, located in Berkeley, California. The studio will be headed by Rob Humble, formerly executive vice president at EA and CEO of Linden Lab, creators of Second Life.

Paradox Interactive is known primarily for its multiple different Grand Strategy games and simulations, including Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings 2, Hearts of Iron, Cities: Skylines, and Stellaris, all of which are known for being very in-depth with a great deal of potential for shenanigans.

The studio is also a publisher for various indie studios, such as Obsidian Entertainment, which released Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny under their umbrella before their purchase by Microsoft.

Paradox Tectonic will be responsible for the development of a brand new IP, which will in turn be published by Paradox itself. It will be joining a number of interior studios, alongside Paradox Arctic, Triumph Studios, the Paradox mobile development team, Harebrained Schemes (who developed Battletech), and the main studio, Paradox Development.

We have no idea of what the new IP will actually be, but it’s likely that it will actually be announced at some point soon, if not by Tectonic itself then by Paradox as a whole. Tectonic is also in a good place for video game development, as a large number of studios are located in California due to its large technology sector.

Considering all of the different games that Paradox has been putting out recently, and how well the majority of them have been received, the company is likely putting a great deal of trust in Rob Humble to get Paradox Tectonic and its new IP off the ground and made into another success.

Hopefully, whatever the studio is working on, it will turn out to be just as good as the other games that Paradox has published.
