Overwatch Ana Guide: Counters, Ability Tips, Strategy, Strengths and Weaknesses

Blizzard’s latest Overwatch hero Ana is a long-range support and brings a lot to the mix. She is a support sniper who can dish out damage and healing effects using her rifle. The general Overwatch Ana Guide for playing Ana is similar to that of Widowmaker.

Heroes who counter Widowmaker are viable options for effectively countering Ana too. Ana’s main weakness is dealing with enemies up close which is why heroes like Genji can give her a tough time. She does, however, has an ability to help with close-range engagements called Sleep Dart.

As for her healing effects, she can heal up teammates and prevent enemy heroes from healing up at the same time. Furthermore, she can buff up one of her teammates with bonus movement speed, increased dealt damage, and reduced damage taken.

Overwatch Ana Guide

Our Ana guide details all her abilities, how to use them effectively, what are some of the heroes that Ana is good/bad against in a match-up, what are her strengths and weaknesses, along with some general tips and strategies.

Ana Abilities and Ability Tips

Biotic Rifle
Ana’s rifle shoots darts that can restore health to her allies or deal ongoing damage to her enemies. She can use the rifle’s scope to zoom in on targets and make highly accurate shots.

Sleep Dart
Ana fires a dart from her sidearm, rendering an enemy unconscious – though any damage will rouse them.

Biotic Grenade
Ana tosses a biotic bomb that deals damage to enemies and heals allies in a small area of effect. Affected allies briefly receive increased healing from all sources, while enemies caught in the blast cannot be healed for a few moments.

Nano Boost
After Ana hits one of her allies with a combat boost, they temporarily move faster, deal more damage, and take less damage from enemies’ attacks.

Although you need not to join the fray directly, if you are caught off-guard, your Sleep Dart can render an enemy hero unconscious. The dart is shot from a secondary pistol instead of Biotic Rifle. This can be used as an escape tool while you are trying to change position.

Biotic Grenade is powerful in the sense that it not only heals teammates, but also renders enemies unable to heal themselves for a short duration. This is specifically useful when it comes to allies at brink of their HP. You cannot only give them a small boost of heal using Biotic Grenade, but also provide them with subsequent healing using Biotic Rifle.

Finally, Ana’s Nano Boost is her ultimate support ability. Anyone who receives Nano Boost gains additional movement speed, dish out more damage, and receive less damage from enemy attacks. While it can be used on any hero, I personally recommend it on heroes like Reinhardt, Roadhog, etc.

Ana Counters and Match-Ups

Tracer is definitely a hard counter to Ana. Since Ana does not have an escape tool except Sleep Dart – which Tracer can avoid using her mobility – Tracer can easily flank her and take her out.

Coming to Pharah, who better knows Ana than her own mother!? Not only Pharah is hard to hit from a distance, she can easily get behind cover if Ana manages to land a couple of hits. While it does not mean much in a straight match-up, you are diverting Ana’s focus from healing her teammates by doing this.

When it comes to sniper versus sniper match-up, not only Hanzo and Widowmaker deal far more damage than Ana, she also lacks in abilities like wall-climbing and grappling hook. While both Hanzo and Widowmaker can utilize abilities such as these, Ana is stuck on ground. However, pay special consideration to her Sleep Dart which has crazy range for a side-arm.

Lastly, coming to synergies, Ana truly complements tanky heroes such as Reinhardt and Roadhog with her Nano Boost ultimate. In addition to this, her long-range healing and Nano Boost can also make Reaper quite hard to eliminate.

How to Play Ana: Tips and Strategies

Only having 6 darts per clip and having to target both allies and enemies at the same time, ammo management is of paramount importance when it comes to playing as Ana. Since she cannot fire multiple rounds from her Biotic Rifle like Widowmaker, you always need to be at a safe distance and never stay in the same position for long durations of time.

Another reason for doing this is because she does have abilities like grappling hooks and wall-climbing. Due to this, she does have access to areas inaccessible by majority of other heroes in the game.

Coming to Biotic Grenade, you should always try to target multiple allies or at least an ally and an enemy at the same time. The reason for this is that the grenade has a cooldown duration of 10 seconds which is why it should not be used on single targets most of the time.

Lastly, do note that the effects of Sleep Dart wear off as soon as the targeted enemy is attacked. Since this is your only escape tool, you should think twice about attacking an enemy. If his/her HP is low and you think you can finish them off using your Biotic Rifle, by all means do so; but if the enemy is at full HP, it is probably better to make a run for it.
