The original Assassin’s Creed was supposed to have a multiplayer mode, but Ubisoft decided to pull out of the idea, former Ubisoft Technology Director Julien Merceron revealed.
Now working for Bandai Namco, Merceron shared this interesting information during a conference held at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris.
According to Merceron, the first Assassin’s Creed was supposed to have multiplayer. There was even a bug in the game associated with this cancelled multiplayer mode, the ex-director suggests. If a second controller was plugged into the console, a second assassin would appear on screen.
This bug was eventually patched out, though Merceron doesn’t exactly know when. The bug originated because the team didn’t even bother testing those features, as they believed they were completely disabled.
The Assassin’s Creed franchise has predominantly been a singleplayer experience, and although there were multiplayer modes in previous editions, the latest installment (Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate) has been completely stripped of the feature.
On a somewhat related note, Julien Merceron also recently sung words of praise for Hideo Kojima, stating that Kojima’s next game in collaboration with Sony will be ‘extraordinary.’ He also stated he would like to work with Kojima again sometime in the future.
Julien Merceron was working for Konami, and deeply involved in Kojima Production’s FOX Engine. The developer recently announced his departure from Konami and him joining Namco Bandai.
