Latest Nvidia GPUs Have Displayport Problems, Can Only Be Fixed With BIOS Update

With “Maxwell”, GTX 900 series, and “Pascal”, GTX 10 series, architectures, Nvidia introduced support for Displayport 1.3 and 1.4, however, the implementation of this in Nvidia GPUs is hardly perfect as many users are reporting issues while using Displayport with latest displays.

Users have reported that issues with Displayport in Nvidia GPUs range from black screen to the system being frozen on boot. However, this DisplayPort issue can’t be fixed with any driver update and has to be fixed with a BIOS update.

However, you won’t have to wait for Nvidia AIC partners for rolling out the BIOS update for Nvidia GPUs as Nvidia has rolled out is own BIOS tool that detects if your Nvidia GPU requires the BIOS update or not.

The update basically uninstalls your driver for your Nvidia GPU and then proceeds to flash the BIOS and fixes the Displayport issue in the process.

Speaking of Nvidia, gamers are waiting for the company to announce its next-gen GPU, the GTX 1180, however, the company has confirmed that its next-gen GPUs are a long way off from now.

According to en-Hsun Huang, CEO of Nvidia, when it is time to reveal he himself will invite everyone but for now, GTX 1180 or next-gen Nvidia GPUs are a long while off from now.

He might be hinting that Nvidia will be skipping its next-gen GPU for 2018 and will continue with its GTX 10 series based on the Pascal architecture.

One indication of this is the release of the GTX 1060 based on GP104 GPU. The GP104 is the same one used in the GTX 1080, 1070 Ti as well as the 1070. Other than that, the specs are identical to the previous variant of GTX 1060. Also, this version of GTX 1060 is exclusive to China.

However, Stuart Oberman will be talking at Hot Chips 30 about the Next Generation Mainstream GPUs from Nvidia. The presentation will take place on August 20th, 2018, which might indicate that Nvidia will be rolling out its next-gen GPUs, presumably GTX 1180 or GTX 2080, by then.
