No Specific Switch Related Announcements From Microsoft

There have been a lot of rumors going since several months now that Microsoft will be bringing its Xbox applications, subscription services, and video games to the Nintendo Switch.

Corporate Vice President for Gaming Cloud, Kareem Choudary says “We don’t have any specific announcements as it relates to Switch today,” during a pre-GDC presser.

Microsoft has been in the news a lot recently. First, we learned about the rumored Halo Master Chief Collection for PC is almost complete and ready to be released soon. Then we learned about the new streaming service “Project xCloud”. The main purpose of this streaming service is to create a “future where you will be able to seamlessly access content on your phone, tablet or another connected device”.

And now Microsoft has announced the new cross-platform mobile development kit, Microsoft Game Stack.

The new SDK will allow developers to implement Xbox Live, Azure PlayFab, DirectX, Mixer and more on Android and iOS devices.

Kareem Choudhry, corporate vice president for Gaming Cloud and Julia White, corporate vice president for Azure, made the announcement during a pre-GDC presser.

Kareem Choudhry said

With one secure sign-in, iOS and Android games will get a consistent experience with fan-favorite Xbox Live features such as achievements, gamerscore, hero stats, friends lists, club memberships, and even some family settings, no matter what device people are playing on

Although the Microsoft Game Stack web page also makes reference to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, Kareem Choudhry says

We don’t have any specific announcements as it relates to Switch today

Now, for regular players, this SDK could mean a great deal. If developers go on to utilize this new SDK, we could be seeing new things pop up such as a boost in performance, new features, progress and achievement sharing and much more across different devices at the same time!

As far as the Switch is concerned, it’s possible that plans to bring the SDK to Switch have been delayed or canceled.
