Nintendo Switch To Support Vulkan, OpenGL 4.5/ES

List updated, Khronos Group recently included the upcoming Nintendo Switch console in the list of Conformant products having the support of Vulkan, OpenGL 4.5 and OpenGL ES. How does developers benefit from this API authorization? Well, they have now three options to choose from and develop modern high-definition graphics for their upcoming games on Nintendo’s newest console.

OpenGL 4.5 and OpenGL Es are like older generation of API but Vulkan originally referred as OpenGL Next or Vulkan 1.0 is next generation API. What does Vulkan 1.0 do actually? Technically, it focuses on reduced driver overhead, reduced load on CPUs and enables improved mulit-core CPU scaling when compared to OPENGL.

NVIDIA recently confirmed that Nintendo Switch will use a highly customized Tegra Processor, possibly a second-generation 20nm, Maxwell iteration or a brand new 16nm FinFET Pascal variant. Despite the finesse in GPU choice, the recent report is a letdown on performance of Nintendo Switch when docked and portable.

CPU clock is halved when portable and GPU runs at 768 MHz while docked and just 307.2 MHz while portable. For more on the report, read here to know the difference of performance on the console docked and portable mode.

The new console launches in March 2017, meanwhile a special event will be held on January 12-14 that will showcase specifications, games lineup and more about Switch.
