New God of War Trailer “Barely Scratched the Surface” on the Combat System

We previously praised the new God of War trailer from Paris Games Week (PGW 2017) for the flashy and dynamic combat exhibition showcased by Kratos and Atreus. It appears that the developer has a lot more from where that came from.

Posting on the official PlayStation Blog, head of Santa Monica Studio Shannon Studstill stated that we saw in the new footage is just a “smidgen – a sliver – of the unflinching, intense, brutal, and often empowering new combat” system in the upcoming game.

In fact, the developer is “barely scratching the surface” on the new combat system and there is so much more that it still has to reveal in the coming months. For example, players will often have to make “strategic decisions” mid-combat that may prove helpful when executed right. This was briefly noted in the new trailer where Atreus points out an explosive cask for Kratos to explode while the ash-covered spartan is beating the living daylights out of the Draugr. Atreus then also landed a dropkick to lead into a cinematic finisher.

“That combat moment in the middle of mayhem is a perfect example of how Kratos and Atreus can take down their enemies together,” Studstill explained.

In relation to the combat system, the new God of War installment will see changes to the weapon upgrade system. We have so far only glimpsed at the mystical rune-covered axe and an expandable shield. There is a lot more here that Santa Monica Studio is keeping to itself for the time being. Hopefully as we approach the new year, the developer will start flexing its muscles.

God of War is scheduled to exclusively release for PlayStation 4 in early 2018.
