It has been quite a while since E3 2018 where we got a plethora of games to look forward to 2019. Seeing as how we are more than halfway towards the end of this year, we have compiled a list of anticipated games of 2019, hopefully, without any delays. Having said that, we have also included some titles which have unconfirmed release dates but may be a surprise launch this year. So all aboard the hype train!
Anticipated Games of 2019
Now we know the rest of this year is going to be a blast. With Spider-Man coming on Sept. 07 and shortly after Rockstar’s much-awaited title, Red Dead Redemption 2 on Oct. 26, we cannot wait! In the same month, we also get the more RPG-focused Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Moreover, we close out the year with a bang thanks to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate which comes out Dec. 07 on Nintendo Switch.
With such an explosive year, we can only have high expectations for the next one and based on what we have seen and heard so far, 2019 will not be any different in terms of greatness. Let us look at some of the most-talked-about titles to go gold in 2019.
Kingdom Hearts 3
Release Date: Jan. 29, 2019 | Platforms: PS4, Xbox One
We start our list with perhaps the title that we have been waiting for since exactly E3 2013 when it was announced. Since then there have been a lot of teases and delays but we will be finally treated to the game in Jan. 2019. We have already seen a lot of the game, with the many worlds and characters that we will be experiencing.
Moreover, with the perfect mix of nostalgia for the previous series, the right amount of Disney crossover characters and cameos, and a fun combat system, there is a lot on the table for this one. Let us see how it turns out.
Resident Evil 2 Remake
Release Date: Jan. 29, 2019 | Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Who did not want to see Leo again in all new photo-realistic light?! Reworked from the core on the new RE engine (previously used by Resident Evil 7), the world looks grim and each zombie kill is extra gory.
The game was is a classic that everyone loved during its time on PS1 and with a new third-person fixed camera, attention to detail, and some narrative changes as well, we cannot hold our horses. This would be the first big horror game of next year.
Anthem
Release Date: Feb. 22, 2019 | Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Next on our list is the upcoming multiplayer-only game from BioWare, a studio that is relatively well known for immersive and narrative-focused singleplayer games. Although this is a new direction for them, they have made brought some great online games in the past like Star Wars: The Old Republic and the recent Mass Effect: Andromeda which at least got some praise for its good multiplayer aspect.
It will be interesting to see how BioWare can fuse amazing storytelling, characterization and fun co-op into a seamless experience. There is a lot riding on this especially regarding the loot-box heavy environment in EA’s previous games. Please be good Anthem!
Metro Exodus
Release Date: Feb. 22, 2019 | Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
With a breath of fresh air and a change of pace thanks to the more outdoor setting of this installment in the Metro series, players are really looking forward to the new challenges that they will face in the open sandbox environments.
There have been improvements to the crafting system so it seems as versatile and portable as ever, and every mission now allows for more freedom in its approach. The mutants are more terrifying than ever and the human foes are not any less scary. We cannot wait to roam the desolate yet in its own way, beautiful landscape of Russia.
Days Gone
Release Date: Feb. 22, 2019 | Platforms: PS4
Sharing its release with two killers mentioned above, the Sony exclusive needs to be something rather unique if it needs to stand apart from The Last of Us, as per fans who have noticed similarities in the settings and tone of both of the games. With that said, the world of Days Gone seem to be more open and more action-fueled with the highest number of zombies ever encountered at a given time on screen.
With the badass biker gang storyline and some brutal gameplay, it can be rather unique than what we are currently expecting.
Crackdown 3
Release Date: Feb. 2019 | Platforms: Xbox One, PC
After having a troubled production with many delays, no-shows at events and controversy surrounding it, we finally got a decent look at what the game will offer in terms of gameplay and setting. Moreover, there has been a promise that there will not be further delays.
Taking advantage of its new engine and allowing for 100% destructible environments, it shows a lot of prospects when it comes to co-op. More so, exclusives have been rather lacking for Xbox last-gen, could this be the year it all changes? We will have to wait and find out.
The Division 2
Release Date: Mar. 15, 2019 | Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
The classified task force is back and with it the virus threat but this time in Washington D.C. The setting we have seen so far has been a near-perfect representation of real-world D.C and bringing in new toys to play with including drones, seeker bombs, and other abilities will surely add variety to the combat of the game.
Moreover, the developers have promised a decent amount of end-game content in terms of both PVP and single-player DLCs. This would be the one to watch, let us hope Ubisoft does not disappoint.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Release Date: Early 2019 | Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Now, we here at SegmentNext are huge fans of the Souls series, and for every person who loves a good challenge, we are talking scratching-head-in-agony type of challenge, you will definitely be looking forth to From Software’s new game, Sekiro.
Set in an awesome re-imagined samurai world, the game brings in new mechanics like allowing for vertical movement, and it ditches out heavy RPG elements for making the game more accessible but nonetheless tough. We are all in for dying probably thousands of times and then repeating anyhow.
Devil May Cry 5
Release Date: Early 2019 | Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Nero returns as our favorite demon-slaying hero, oh wait, that title should go to Dante. Well, we think we saw a glimpse of him right at the end of the announcement trailer. Anyways, after receiving a mixed reception on the spin-off, DMC, the series returns to its roots.
This time, Nero has a cool futuristic arm gadget that lets him turn the action way up in the combat. The graphics have seen a complete overhaul from DMC and judging from the trailer, we can expect many interesting and memorable characters. For all those combo-attack loving Ninja Gaiden fans, avert your attention to this, it will be a certain treat.
Gears of War 5
Release Date: 2019 | Platforms: Xbox One, PC
There is a returning threat, something that is bothering the main protagonist of the game, something not right about the world. The Locust are back and more terrifying than ever. Iconic characters including Marcus Fenix return and everything seems a little more mature and darker.
We sure love seeing Gears of War in a new light and seeing as how this along with Crackdown 3 are the only two games Microsoft is currently focusing on rolling out, we can be sure it will be a great one. We are hoping for it to capture the same nostalgia of the previous Gears of War games and bringing in unique and refreshing features at the same time.
Rage 2
Release Date: Jun. 2019 | Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Adopting the fast-paced gunplay of DOOM, the open sandbox environment of Borderlands, and the craziness of the Mad Max film series, this is what first-person-shooter fans must be dreaming about. Bethesda has arguably never failed in its attempt to create a captivating single player game.
Although the previous Rage was, a little forgettable, it was still praised for its gameplay. With a new open-world formula and distinct environments with distinct challenges, Rage 2 brings the fast and frenzy action to consoles and computers this summer.
Control
Release Date: 2019 | Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PS4
After working on back-to-back exclusives for Microsoft with Alan Wake and Quantum Break, Remedy Entertainment has decided to go multi-platform with its strange beast, a time-bending, telekinesis-using female Max Payne? That certainly seems to be the case.
Moreover, there also seem to be some horror elements involved. From what we saw in the trailer, the level design seems awe-inspiring and we cannot just get enough of the cinematic action that the guys behind Remedy have been known for. We still have not got our Alan Wake sequel but maybe this will calm us (and probably you guys) down for now.
Maybe Some More Titles?
Quite a few games have unconfirmed release dates but could come out this year. The Last of Us 2 is probably the game most people have been wanting for a long time now. The demo certainly showed us how Naughty Dog is always evolving with each title they roll out.
Death Stranding, the next title from the legendary, Hideo Kojima, seems to have been around for a while now, and it is only fitting Kojima surprises us with a release date soon.
Moreover, Sony has also claimed that they have never seen a game develop so fast, maybe Death Stranding is already finished, who knows? Lastly, Ghost of Tsushima is also looking very promising and near-completion, so we are hoping to see that too this year if we are lucky.
Then there is Cyberpunk 2077 and it is awesome, we will leave it just at that. Maybe CD Project Red has completed its progress on the RPG already? Its announcement came as a surprise too.
2019 is beginning to look like a complete home run as of now. With so many titles to look forward to and much more unannounced to fall in the same year, will the next year mark a probable explosive end to this gen consoles? Of course, there is Game of Thrones returning in 2019 too, so prioritize my folks.
