Monster Hunter World Research Points Guide

Research Points in Monster Hunter: World allow you to know your prey a little better. However, in case you do not know how to acquire Research Points.

In order to extend beyond a generic hunter and rise above the average crowd that plays Monster Hunter World, you need to get to know your prey. This Monster Hunter World Research Points Guide will tell you how to get Research Points and then use them for your own good. Read on to find out how Research Points will change how you play the game and make your experience more worthwhile.

Monster Hunter World Research Points

First of all, let’s take a look at how to earn these Research Points. When your Scoutflies point out various different clues in the area, you will be able to earn these Research Points for examining those clues. These clues can be everything from skid marks and feathers to mucus and footprints.

Almost everything you do will earn you Research Points. Eventually, you will start unlocking investigations, but there are many other things you can do with the Research Points as well.

You will only be earning a few Research Points at a time, but they will eventually build up because almost everything in the game requires you to earn Research Points along the way.

In general, there are three different ways you can spend your Research Points in the game.

You can either cash them in at Palico armor close to the smithy’s workshop and buy a brand-new armor, or you can go to the canteen and pay for your meals using these points.

Lastly, you can do Botanical Research to purchase fertilizer in the later stages of the game.

You can utilize the Research Points to make the following purchases:

  • Polico equipment: To make Polico a powerful combatant by buying better weapons and armor.
  • Canteen Food: Save the money and utilize the Research Points to buy canteen food in cheap prices.
  • Botanical Research Center Fertilizer: Buy fertilizers through Research Points to grow more herbs.
  • Tailraider Safari Missions: Buy Palicoes mercenaries teams to hunt monsters for you and collect items.
  • Melding Pot: Craft rare items in the Melding Pot utilizing your Research Points to buy the necessary items for crafting

Levels and Ecological Research

If I had to explain the Research Points system in the simplest of ways, then I would say to just shut up and pick everything that you see.

You will get either generic points or monster specific points. The difference between the two is that the monster specific points will impact your relationship with the Chief Ecologist which is found in Astera.

Find the Chief behind the Resource Centre in the Tradeyard, and then you will earn monster specific points which will increase your monster research level.

This level can only increase if you visit the Chief Ecologist regardless of how many Research Points you have earned. The more monster research level you have, the more detail about it is available in your notes.

Lastly, whenever your Scoutflies are able to pick up the traces of monsters, they gain points which will increase their own personal level. A Level 1 Scoutfly can only lead you to a trace found in the Monster’s trail; a Level 2 Scoutfly will lead you to the monster whereas a Level 3 one will make the location and the status of the monster appear directly on your map.

This makes gathering Research Points very crucial to your progress in the game. Just remember that your Scoutfly level can degrade over time so you need to be on a constant lookout for monsters to make sure your Scoutflies are in shape.
