Microsoft to Introduce Cross-Network Online Play, Rocket League is First

Xbox One and Microsoft Windows have been growing ever closer recently with a host of games made exclusive for both systems. We even talked about this relationship a couple of weeks ago. With so many games available for both PC and Xbox One, could we soon be seeing cross-network online play as well? It seems so.

The official Rocket League website has confirmed that their title will be the first game to introduce cross-platform online functionalities between both the Xbox One and the PC. The statement reads as follows:

“Rocket League and Xbox One cross-network play will soon become a reality!
To say that the team here at Psyonix is both honored and excited to have Rocket League as the first cross-network game is a massive understatement. Cross-network play has been the number-one most requested feature our community has asked for since Rocket League was first announced on Xbox One, and now that we are able to pursue complete online unity on all platforms, today’s announcement is a dream come true.
Expect to see Rocket League cross-network play working on Xbox One and PC later this spring, with information regarding other platforms coming soon.”

The most revealing information to come from this however is the last sentence. We may soon be treated to cross-network online play between consoles, meaning that Xbox One and Playstation 4 players may finally be able to compete against each other, along with those preferring to play on PC.

Paragon has already began testing cross-network play between PS4 and PC, but this new information comes with the hope of a more widespread effect across games and platforms. Psyonix state that their game will be the “first cross-network game”, meaning that more are scheduled to follow.

Every player wants more competition, fewer waiting times and a greater selection of opponents no matter where they are or what they are playing with. Of course, there will be plenty of logistical obstacles to overcome when it comes to cross-console play but this news could open so many doors for the future.
