Microsoft Research Presents Significant Advances In Virtual Reality

We know that virtual reality is a sector that has a lot of field to develop. Thanks to new sensors and equipment it is possible to refine the experience and make it more immersive and accessible. This, coupled with the efforts of researchers, scientists and engineers, gradually overcome the challenges of this technology and overcome its impediments.

Microsoft is an important part of this, and recently presented the news that its researchers provided. The demonstration was carried out within the framework of the ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology 2019, which was held in New Orleans. In this event, some virtual reality projects were presented that were developed in collaboration with Microsoft.

The first one is the DreamWalker. This allows users to recreate an environment in virtual reality and walk as if a user were present in it. But the important thing is that the program could adapt the desired place (virtual) to the streets where the player lives, since the software would choose the ones that best fit the real one in order for the user to navigate safely.

This would also be achieved with the help of sensors, which would detect the obstacles discovered in reality and that the user could not see, but would be represented in the virtual world and thus avoid them.

Another one is the Mise-Unseen project, which has great potential to provide more interactive virtual reality experiences, since its technology could alter what the user sees on the screen to such an extent that he does not realize.

To achieve this, student Sebastian Marwecki and Microsoft Research researchers Wilson, Ofek, Gonzalez and Holz devised software that tracks the eyeball to change what the VR viewer projects when the user does not pay attention to certain objects.

Finally there is CapstanCrunch. This command is designed to have a greater immersion in terms of touch, since the command consists of a mechanism that gives feedback according to the object that is manipulated in virtual reality and resembles the force necessary to manipulate them. Specifically, CapstanCrunch is based on the movement of the thumb and index finger.

To the latter is attached a small brake that amplifies the force of an engine, and that may have different resistance depending on the virtual object. It is precisely this mechanism that makes it a more accessible option, compared to others that only use engines.

In other news, there is a lot of excitement about the arrival of the new Microsoft Flight Simulator, especially since its Insider Program is active with various Alpha tests. Thanks to this, several players had the opportunity to test the title before their debut.  There are some aviation fans who are convinced that Microsoft Flight Simulator would be a great virtual reality experience.

However, Microsoft did not give details about the use of such technology during the presentation of the game at E3 2019. Given this, Jorg Neumann, director of the game, revealed that initially they did not have among their plans to use virtual reality in the game. However, they are aware of the wishes of the players, so now they do not discard it at all.

We are listening, and we have heard it, so we will do everything possible to make this happen. Whether we achieve it or not for the launch, we cannot commit to it at this time, but we are aware of the desire.

The creative commented that they will give priority to some sections of the title, but they will also give importance to the implementation of virtual reality. Of course, it’s great news, especially for how ambitious Microsoft Flight Simulator will be in terms of its world and mechanics.
