Intel Z300 Series Motherboards Support Coffee Lake CPUs, Intel To Launch 6 Core 12 Thread CPU In H2 2017

It has not been long since the Z270 chipset was announced and we are already getting rumors regarding the upcoming Intel Z300 series. Rumors claim that there will be 2 new platforms coming out by the end of the year.

Intel Z300 Series Chipset and X299 Platform

The two platforms will be X299 which will support Skylake-X CPUs and the Intel Z300 series platform will introduce support for Coffee Lake CPUs. This is the first time that we are hearing about support for the upcoming next gen CPUs and it is very interesting indeed.

Intel Z300 Series

The Intel Z300 series will bring the following improvements:

  • PCI Express 3.0 x24 lane
  • USB 3.1 Gen2
  • Built-in Gigabit Wi-Fi

It is possible that these boards will cost more but it is also possible that the boards will cost the same and that they will offer more value for money seeing how they are introducing new features. Cannon Lake CPUs will be based on the LGA 1151 socket so you will not need to change your motherboard if you are already using Skylake or Kaby Lake chips.

Intel To Launch 6 Core 12 Thread CPU In H2 2017

Reports claim that Intel is working on a 6 core, 12 thread CPU that will be coming out in the second half of 2017 and there is no denying that this will be launched in order to counter AMD Ryzen. AMD already has the upper hand when it comes to core count as compared to price and this is a threat to Intel.

We will have to see at what price point Intel decides to release this CPU and whether or not the Z300 series chipset will support it. I have always said that competition is great for the consumer and this is a great example of that.
