How to Upgrade Weapons and Armor in The Outer Worlds

Like a true RPG, The Outer Worlds allows players to upgrade their weapons and armors for maximum efficiency to deal with any sort of combat situation

When you start out in The Outer Worlds, you might deal with a hard time due to your lackluster armor and weapons. Furthermore, it is pretty difficult to find weapons and armor which are much better than yours. This is where the upgrade system comes in.

The Outer Worlds gives you the ability to use a workbench to experiment with your weapons, so you can upgrade them and increase your chances of survival. This guide contains all the information you need to know about the weapon and armor upgrade system in The Outer Worlds.

Upgrade Weapons & Armor in The Outer Worlds

The Outer World gives you two different options to upgrade your weapon; both of these require a workbench.

Workbenches are present in most of the game’s major settlements. If you’re somehow having trouble finding one, there is always one available in the Unreliable. When you interact with a workbench, you will be presented with the options to either tinker with your gear, or to install weapon mods.

Each weapon and armor piece available in the game possesses its own level. This level can be increased by tinkering, using a workbench. Do note that your science skill must be at least 20, and you also have to allocate a couple of points to the tech skill to be able to tinker.

Once you’re at a workbench, select the weapon/armor you wish to upgrade in the Tinker tab, then press either X/A to confirm your choice.

Tinkering won’t give your item any special features or abilities, it will just grant a pure stat boost. It will cost you some Bits. However, the damage/defense increase of your item will be permanent.

While tinkering, you need to keep a few things in mind. The first one is that the cost of tinkering items increases with the increase in the item’s level. This can be somewhat negated by allocating more points in the science skill, which will decrease the cost.

The second is that the level of the item can only be increased up to the level of your character. This is a very smart mechanic to stop players from abusing tinkering.

Modifications will most likely be your first choice to upgrade your weapons – unless you allocated a ton of points into the tech skill. ‘Mods’ are items that can be found as pickups throughout the world; they can also be obtained as drops from some enemies.

As soon as you pick up your first mod, the modification feature will become available.

Once you are in possession of a mod, get to a workbench and choose whatever piece of gear to want to install the mod on – in the ‘Mods’ tab. When you choose your item, it will display a list of the mods you currently own.

After you select your mod, press the X/A button to confirm your selection. As with the tinkering upgrades, mod installations are permanent and cannot be removed.
