How To Set Up Internet Connection on PS4

Find out how you can set up Internet Connection on PS4. Which settings you need to change, which ports you need to forward and how you can test your connection.

The Internet has been a necessity now, whether it’s for work, education, or even gaming. This fact spreads out to even consoles, with the all-important requirement of staying connected to the interwebs.

The PlayStation 4 requires connections for many purposes, of which the primary is connecting to the PSN (PlayStation Network), which gives users all kinds of services.

Setting Up Internet Connection on PS4
Like your computer, there are two ways to connect the PlayStation 4 to your router: through LAN or Wi-Fi. Most people would prefer the latter for reducing redundant wires, but the PS4 can support both easily.

Head to [Network] > [Set Up Internet Connection] to initiate the setup wizard.

Connecting with a LAN cable:
For LAN, you must first connect the LAN cable from your router to the PS4 system. Select [Use a LAN Cable] and then [Easy], and follow the screens while the standards settings get selected.

Connecting through WiFi:
For a WiFI connection, enough that you have a wireless hotspot to connect to and that your PS4 is within its signal’s radius. Select [Use Wi-Fi], and then [Easy], and follow the screens.

If your access point is not found, you may want to use the [Set up Manually] option and insert connection details accordingly. Seek help from your ISP or router provider for further understanding of your internet setup.

Staying Connected
If an internet connection is already set up in your place, the PlayStation 4 will automatically detect it and attempt to connect. The connection is disabled when the checkmark is removed from [Network] > [Connect to the Internet].

PS4 will remain connected as long as it is running, and even when it is in standby mode. If you wish to save power and have the system disconnect during standby, you can change the settings in the following manner:

[Settings] > [Power Save Settings] > [Set Functions Available in Standby Mode] > [Connect to the Internet]

Uncheck the [Connect to the Internet] option, and your PS4 will disconnect during standby.

Testing Your Connection
To ensure your internet connection is working efficiently, you would want to run a test through the PS4 system. Select [Network] > [Test Internet Connection].

There are multiple details shown here, each of them shows parameters that determine the quality of your connection and other details such as address and speeds.

NAT Type
Shows further details of your connection type to the PSN. There are three types:

Type 1: The system is connected directly to the Internet.
Type 2: The system is connected to the Internet with a router.
Type 3: The system is connected to the Internet with a router.

Type 3 suggests that communication with other PS4 systems through the internet might not be impossible. This is primarily due to ISP restrictions or router firewalls.

When you have a Type 3 connection, consider forwarding the following ports on your router:

  • TCP: 80, 443, 1935, 3478, 3479, 3480
  • UDP: 3478, 3479

The method of forwarding your port varies according to brand and model of your router/modem. Contact your provider for further details.
