Hideo Kojima Offers Comparison Between Game Making And Film Making

Hideo Kojima knows that there’s a lot of differences between filmmaking and video game development, though playing a Metal Gear game you might be hard-pressed to see that. The games are already filmed like action movies, but Kojima offered an interesting comparison between the two mediums when it comes to learning.

Kojima has said to imagine video game development as the player working down a corridor, mainly how they end up learning the controls and getting better and better at the game as they progress. The hallway can also lead to a large number of branching paths depending on game focus, such as the story, showing off the scenery, or add rhythm to the gameplay. All of this is in contrast to films, which mainly take the audience in a straight line with few other paths.

In making this comparison, Kojima brought up PT, his infamously cancelled Silent Hill game that he was collaborating with with Guillermo Del Toro. Silent Hills, which the game was supposed to promote, drummed up a lot of buzz at the dream team that was being assembled. However, Kojima’s fallout with Konami killed the game and kept Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain from being finished.

Since then Hideo Kojima has moved on, re-opening Kojima Productions under his own umbrella as part of Sony and creating Death Stranding, which stars Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen among other actors.

Another thing that he mentioned in his tweets about the subject was criticism of studios outsourcing work to other studios in order to work on other things, which would result in a part of the game that couldn’t be adjusted. He used Deus Ex: Human Revolution as an example, which included multiple boss fights that couldn’t be skipped and didn’t really mesh with the rest of the game.

Either way, Hideo Kojima will likely continue to work on his own games and enjoy being free of Konami, so in the meantime we’ll just have to wait and see how Death Stranding will play out.
