Hellblade Sales Break 500K, Pushing The Game Into The Profitable Zone

Hellblade sales have apparently passed the 500K mark, making the game profitable for its developer Ninja Theory. The game, which was released in August, is for the Playstation 4 and PC. The game’s sales mark was actually announced in its final dev diary, which was posted on YouTube just today.

According to Ninja Theory, the game was predicted to only sell around 150,000 copies, but actually managed to sell 250,000 copies in its first week on both the PC and the Playstation 4 combined. The game selling 500,000 copies means that it’s passed its break-even point, so now it’s recouped the costs of development.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, tells the tale of a Celtic girl named Senua, who is traveling into the Norse underworld in order to retrieve the soul of her lover who was killed in a Viking raid. Facing demons both outer and inner, Senua must overcome her mental illness and past traumas to make it to the realm of Helheim, where she will ask the goddess Hel to restore her lover to life.

Though the game is mainly a cinematic narrative experience, it does have sections of combat, along with boss fights. It won critical acclaim for its depiction of psychosis and its narrative, and while it might not be for everyone, it’s apparently been good for enough people to make the game profitable rather than being a bomb for Ninja Theory.

Hellblade was first announced back at Gamescom 2014 and then apparently dropped off the map for the next three years with no real fanfare or idea of what the game was about. Hellblade sales reaching 500,000 units over the course of around three months is also likely because of how it released, saving on distribution costs by only being released digitally, and cheaper than many other Triple-A games.
