Report: Halo Infinite Development Cost Makes it The Most Expensive Game Ever

Halo Infinite is the biggest and most expensive project in the history of the gaming industry, with a budget of over $500 million according to a rumor/report. It’s worth noticing since $500 million doesn’t yet include the marketing costs.

If that’s true, this makes the next entry in the Halo series more expensive than Red Dead Redemption 2/GTA 5 by Rockstar Games, which is known to invest a significant amount of money on its games. The rumor was reported by a producer Ralf Adam on a German site.

German producer Ralf Adam said:

At the moment the game in development with the widest budget available is Halo Infinite. It has an immensely larger budget than that of Red Dead Redemption 2. We are talking about a huge figure, but being a rumor I don’t mean precise figures, but we really talk about a crazy figure … 200? 500 million? Maybe … or maybe many more.

The budget reportedly contains the cost of developing Slipspace engine which will be used for developing other titles in Halo series. The above information should be taken with a grain of salt as the German site doesn’t provide any proof of the claims nor it’s known for revealing correct details.

Is the rumor true or not? it’s another debate. If $500 million includes marketing costs, that would make a lot more sense but without it? We don’t know what they are possibly trying to achieve. We have seen expensive shooters in the past like Destiny, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 spending a huge load of money in development but they never exceeded the $300 million mark which makes Halo 6 an exceptional case.

Although, it’s believable since Halo Infinite is rumored to be an open world game which cost more like RDR 2. Secondly, it could be due to the title coming out on multi-platforms including the next-gen Microsoft console: Xbox Scarlett, Project Xcloud and PC. Because of that, 343 Industries and Microsoft would require an unbelievable amount of budget ($500).

The word “Infinite” in the title suggests the game to be a live service model game so maybe Microsoft is just gearing up for the future in order to entertain fans even after years of the game’s launch.

Whether it’s true or not, 343i has yet to clarify. That said, Halo Infinite will be making an appearance at E3 2019, where we expect to know about the game in more detail.

Halo Infinite is in development for Xbox One and PC with no release date yet.
