Grand Theft Auto 5 Is The 3rd Best-Selling Video Game In History With 85M Copies Sold

Grand Theft Auto 5 is undeniably the most successful title for Rockstar Games with it being a must-play for all platforms and Game of the Year 2013. Now, after its quarterly report, Take-Two has revealed that Grand Theft Auto V has sold more than 85 million copies worldwide on PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, marking it the third most sold game in history.

This makes GTA V the third best selling game of all times, after Tetris and Minecraft, which were both trend-setting and game-changing titles. Let’s see the top 5 best-selling video games worldwide and their overall sales:

  • Tetris – 170M copies
  • Minecraft – 122M copies
  • Grand Theft Auto 5 – 85M copies
  • Wii Sports – 82.8M copies
  • Super Mario Bros. – 40.2M copies

Even though Grand Theft Auto 5 is only third on the worldwide ladder, it still seems to be the king when it comes to US sales.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is still one of the most successful video games right now and one that every gamer has on his shelf, not only for its gameplay and single player story but mainly for GTA Online, where players can go completely wild and explore a whole new game.

GTA Online has been hugely successful for Take Two & Rockstar. Net Revenues from GTA products exceeded $700 million over last year.

Even though there has been no GTA V single-player expansion or DLC and Rockstar Games has been rolling out DLC for the online version the company had a really good reason for that. As they explained the story of the game was “very complete” as it was and players would enjoy single player on Rockstar’s next titles like Red Dead Redemption 2.

GTA V has been immensely successful for Rockstar Games and the studio is currently working on Red Dead Redemption 2 which will launch in early 2018. However, publisher Take-Two doesn’t expect Red Dead Redemption 2 to be as successful as GTA V.

GTA V is a third-person action-adventure game developed by Rockstar Games for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
