GDDR5X Nvidia GTX 1060 Officially Confirmed

A GDDR5X Nvidia GTX 1060 leak surfaced a while back and we heard that Nvidia might be working on a new GTX 1060 model that comes with GDDR5X memory. The standard GTX 1060 comes with GDDR5 memory so this faster memory should increase performance slightly.

The official site now mentions the GDDR5X Nvidia GTX 1060. This means that the product exists and might be around the corner. We have not been able to find a model that comes with the new memory so it is more than likely that these GDDR5X Nvidia GTX 1060 graphics cards have not released yet.

What we can say for certain is that this is not a replacement for the older cards with older memory. Both cards will be available side by side and you can choose to go with either one. Talking about the specs, they are pretty much the same. 1280 CUDA Cores, 1506 MHz base clock and 1708 boost clock.

An interesting thing to note here is that the original card came with the GP106, this new one is a cut-down version of the GP104. Which means that this is kind of a cut down version of the GTX 1080. Another interesting point worth noting is that we are hearing about the GDDR5X Nvidia GTX 1060 at the same time as the RX 590.

Both of these cards are refreshes. The RX 590 might be based on the 12nm process but we are not sure about that. What we do know for sure is that it is going to be Polaris based. The GTX 1060 GDDR5X will be Pascal based so nothing new here.

The new 1060  might offer a small bump in performance but it might not be worth the upgrade for people that already own the standard 6 GB GTX 1060. But if you do own an older model then you should check this out as this is the best selling card in the 10 series.

Let us know what you think about the GDDR5X Nvidia GTX 1060 and whether or not you are interested in getting one of these graphics cards when they are available.
